I've had much the same issues with Vallejo paints. For example, I've lately been painting some Ultramarines for Epic 40.000. And I pretty much have to take my airbrush completely apart and run it though my ultrasonic cleaner after every cup of Ultramarine paint. Doesn't seem to matter much...

Just how close to the front did such units typically get? Weren't they supposed to be able to keep up with the Panzers (hence why the guns were mounted on a tank) and to be able to engage in combat (hence the armoured compartment for the crew)? Considering how chaotic the German production was...

What do you mean by "upwards"? If we think of a wing, then I would try to streak from the front and towards the trailing edge, mimicking the natural flow of grime as the wind sweeps over the wing. In the same way, On a tank I would streak from top to bottom, mimicking the way gravity would...
