Well looks like you got it done right and I hear you about that old age. I have more good days than bad, knock on wood, but when I get a bad day? I always seem to mess something up that's crucial. It's best just to go out and play with the dog

That's something that struck me as I work on the USS IOWA, I'm building the largest model I ever attempted with some of the smallest parts I ever dealt with.
The USS HORNET is looking good. :)
MANY thanks Kevin

So many details that are just lost at smaller scales

I'd love to do a 1/200 scale at some point
WHY not get a kit an have a go as im enjoyin building my hornet just like Kevin is on his iowa an it dont need to be a big ship do a small 1/200 scale if there is one
chrisb

WELL Blakeh1 there you go kevin has found one come an jion us building 1/200 ships ?
chrisb

Money right now is tight, so I am trying to go through the stash rather than justifying buying new stuff at the moment.

Someday though I'd like to do a 1/200 battleship once thing ease up

In the meantime, I do have a 1/350 Yorktown with the Eduard photo-etch set ( had all the stuff for the superstructure and railings etc...)
I started it a while back back but shelved in favor of finishing a couple of 1/700 carriers first and also I need to get some more paint for the camo scheme

I should really get back to that, seeing both your builds is great motivation for that

YES I understand money probs as im a penshioner an my money dont go far so yes i understand on that but try an get back to your yorktown then as 1/350 is a nice size an should make an instresting build for us guys to follow but up to you sir on that but i would like to see it happen so i can follow your build

Hi, Edbert! I'm getting caught up on your project now. This is ambitious-my scale for ships is much smaller, 1/700. You've got great progress there.
...I think they have something wrong on the site, it looks like this Hornet kit used to be CV-6. Huh? Are 6 & 8 that similar?
If the kits are both by I Love Kit, then it's very possible that they just reboxed the sprues.

The Yorktowns-Yorktown (CV-5), Enterprise (CV-6), and Hornet (CV-8)-were sister ships, and very similar. Though the Hornet had some details that set her apart from the other two. One was that her bridge had a rounded face, rather than straight across. She also had a different AA battery in front of the island. But most companies that have kitted the sisters have just used the same sprues for all three. You'd have to compare photos, though, to see the details.

The Hornet was approved under the program that would produce the Essexes, and she was originally to have been the first of the Essex design. But the plans weren't ready, so she was built as a third Yorktown.

As far as her camo measure goes, it was designed for use in the Atlantic, where she was going to be deployed, until the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and brought us into the war. The Wasp had a similar measure, for the same reason.

Anyway, this'll be really cool when you get her lit! Looking forward to your next post!

Best regards,
Brad

You can get electrically conductive adhesive.
Loctite Ablestik is one.
We use it at work for repairs to PCBs and sensitive components.
Ours is specialist and expensive, (100 quid!) but there are other makes from 3 or 4 quid.
Search Google.

hi locomotive WOWi dint know that cheers sir i will have a look an see if i can buy some cant afford the 100 quid one but will go up to 20 quid or so as it can make all the difference to my hornet build so now gonna have a look see many thanks sir

HI LOCO well ive looked up about this conduckitve paint an the prices in the link an they are too dear for me so many thanks sir for your invaluble help an the info but ive just exspriemented with the solderin iron onto the copper foil tape an i found i only need to just touch the iron onto the wire an copper tape an it solders the wire brilliantly an as the flightdeck plastic is about an eighth thick it has done no damage to the flight deck surface so im goin to carry on this way but thank you very much sir for telling me cheers

Well Chris, I really do not think anyone can provide you with a correct answer. It is your model; only you can determine what tone, dark or light you want your ship to be! For example if you want a ship that looks like she was just launched; you will want those bright, vibrant colors. But if you want her to look like she just sailed across the Pacific Ocean you may want her to look considerably muted.

The first photo is of the kit documentation, ie. no weathering. The next two reflect how a goood modeler has handled it; and the fourth is the actual ship, 6 mo.s post doolittle. By Oct 1942 there is considerabably more weathering than on Doolitles launch!

My opinion, she looks good; you just need to keep all the others consistent! She is shaping up nicely; I hope to start modeling again in a couple of days.
Chris, I am reading an article in Air Classics about the Doolitte Raid and it shows the Hornet on Feb. 28, 1942 camouflaged to "Measure 12 with Navy Blue, Ocean Gray, and Haze Gray" if that helps at all.
Keep up the build!

Also in the article, it shows two Navy SBDs on deck. Do any of the "shipbuilders/historians" in this Forum have documentation acknowledging when final "shuffling and staging" of the Doolittle aircraft took place?? Were there two SBDs on deck on launch date, April 18th?? I'm just curious from an accuracy standpoint. Would that change your build layout if true?
Here are two photos from the article. Please read caption of second one stating that some F4F Wildcats left on deck for emergency???? Again I'm curious if anyone has data on that mission showing deck layout at time of launch?
