Pretty sure the flora and fauna in the great white north is different than arid Texas, but around here the only "ground bees" we have are what we call "bumblebees".

They are quite large compared to a honeybee, I think their nickname comes from their loud sound.

YES Edbert i had a load of these bumlebees tryin to make a nest in my garage so had to stop them as i dont like to kill them so i blocked off the nest as when my missus jen treid to open the garage doors they came out an swarmed around her an she was frightend in case they stung her but now thankfully they have got the message an gone elsewhere

We have them too. Big fellows, usually docile unless you step on one (don't ask me how I know).
I think they are more solitary, and yes, do like to chill in an underground hangout, kinda like some modelers I know.

However, according to Mr Googles, ground bees include
some species like yellowjackets... can be defensive and sting multiple times
We just call them ground bees, you call them Yellowjackets.
 
... which brings to mind those blasted deerflies, land on your head and leave with a half-pound of flesh.

Nothing worse than diving into a placid lake, feel the rush of calming cool water as you glide below the surface, only to come up and have one of those tormentors land on your head.
Horse flies as well and if you are familiar with Maine, then you know about the Black Flies
