Fellow Modelers,

Below are photos of 31" (1/69 scale) Disney Nautilus from the movie "20,000 Leagues Beneath the Sea". I bought the kit in 2001 from a company called Sci-fi Matters. It was advertised as "20K Submarine" and did not reference Disney, Nautilus or the kit's designer Scott Brodeen. It is a resin kit with a few of the smaller parts out of white metal. The parts had great detail, but required a good deal of "elbow grease" to achieve a proper fit. A lot of minor repairs were required to fix scratches in the upper and lower hull castings. I wound up replacing over 1,000 rivets (with 5-minute epoxy) that were lost during sanding. The base color was mixed per the instructions (black/gray/rust) which created a dark chocolate color. After it was applied, various shades of rust were added with an airbrush and pastel sticks. Finally, it was dry-brushed with Model Master Light Ghost Gray. I hope you enjoy the photos.

urumomo-Thanks for the compliment and welcome! I too remember going on the Nautilus water ride at Disney World in the early 1970's. It is funny how time changes our perception and memory. As an eight year old at Disney World for the first time I can remember how the park was so big and one of the best places I had ever been. Fast forward decades later when my wife and I took our two children (about 10 and 7) to the same place and my main memories about that trip were about how long the lines were and how much my feet hurt at the end of each day! I still have the souvenir bronze medallion I got as a little boy-shown below.

Pantherman-Thanks for the welcome.

Very Cool.
I wish I still had the American Airline wings they gave me flying back from out there ,
My family took the Amtrak out to California , from Houston , and that's how we were supposed to be returning , but , we ended up flying back . ( the adults had enough of all that train fun , lol )
I'm sure aboard a Boeing 707 .

Great model. Those rivets must have been a pain, worth the finished result though. Well done.

Down Time/Bunker45/blakeh1-Thanks for the compliments!

Bunker45-Yes, replacing the lost rivets was a pain and a true labor of love.

Down Time-Thanks for the welcome!

Outstanding model! I was not aware of the kit that you built. I have always been a huge fan of the Disney Nautilus and ended up scratch building one from a set of Disney drawings in 1/48th. I built mine while stationed in Iceland back in 1993 and it is now sitting in my shop all these years later. I attached a crappy old photo.
Again, beautiful model!

Larry B-Thanks for the compliment! Scratch-building a Disney Nautilus is a really big challenge, so hats off to you for doing it! The model in the photo you posted looks great! You should post more.

Awesome!

All that is missing is Peter Lorre and Kirk Douglas from the '54 movie!
Seriously though, brought me right back to pre-teen me, reading the Classics Illustrated version when I was supposed to be sleeping! And all those nightmare tentacles!

Encore!
