Workplace Blocks?

As it stands, I can still access SMA without too much of an issue, but alot of sites are starting to get steamrolled into the " Network Security Filter". Sites like YouTube, Vimeo, Amazon, Newegg, starwarsmodeler, starshipmodeler, finescale modeler, armorama....etc. are being systematically blocked into oblivion. I'm counting the days until they somehow find us running as a " Blog/Opinion/News Feed" and put the screws to our use of SMA while at work.

I know it sounds like I do nothing else BUT look at these sites, but I assure you it's only during some down time. I'm sure it's being abused elsewhere or the budget cuts have put stress on the networks.

Figured I needed to rant a bit, since I cant watch any of ScaleModelMedic's videos or any SMA updates.

Anyone else experience workplace internet blocks ?

Yup, they have "media sharing" sites like PB and Flicker blocked at my brokerage. I just cruise the sight on my phone all day.

Since I own my business: No, I don't put up blocks. I pay most of my employees a percentage of what they bring in. So if they are sitting idle, they don't earn money for themselves. Takes care of that problem pretty well.

Facebook, E-bay, Amazon and porn of course.....eer......um.....eer not that i look at porn ::)....eer.... at work......eer...uum.......eer......or at home ::)....... eer........uum........eerrr.......honest gov ::)

Everything else is ok

Gag

It's silly. But most people still think that productivity will raise with these sorts of measures. Setting objectives and making people responsible for them is the best way, but most managers still believe in raw work hours and no distractions.

You hit the nail on the head. Most new, dynamic, profitable companies I work with all have very flexible work environments.

In our case, it's also the drain on bandwidth. Youtube and sites that stream content suck HUGE amounts of network resources.
I can hit a lot of the forums from work, but can't see images from certain hosts.
Seems to depend a lot on who's calling the shots at your employer's IT department

I can still hit all the forums with onyl a few of the photo hosting sites being blocked and resulting in red x's. I can even use the Facebook though the version of IE they have here is so bad I usually just sign into the mobile version, even on my desktop. So far, they've only NICELY asked (but suggested they would be watching) with regard to YouTube and other streaming media sites, but haven't actually blocked them.

The only site blockage that really irks me is The Chive ;)

Sadly, next to no signal inside the building, so phone surfing isn't an option. Though it could be worse, most people here can't have their phones in their offices at all :-X

I am largely responsible for a web filtering system for bout 1600 goverment employees and am not afraid to block sites for everyones benefit.
We have different levels of access based on roles.

Sites are blocked for various reasons, bandwidth (most companies get charged like wounded bulls if they go over a pre set amount of data), security (there are so much malware/virus threats out there), productivity (usually more of a management issue when staff abuse the privelage) infrastructure overheads (monitoring threats, cutomizing rules, creating reports)

I do agree that a workplace should offer staff some internet access but I get annoyed when they feel its a right to have access to anything and everything.

Tip#1
NEVER EVER use the 'proxy bypass' type sites to access blocked content as that is a gateway for all the nasties out there
Tip#2
Track down and read whatever 'internet use policy' your workplace has. You probably signed when you started work without reading it.

As did I :)

Tip#3
Make friends with your IT department, its amazing how much easier things happen.
