Those are "balloon" sand tires. The Type 877 was basically a "bug" body shell over a Kubelwagen chassis & running gear. The extra suspension height allowed the low-pressure Kubelwagen sand tires to be fitted.

I agree that it gives the bug a funky look... kind of like a punch-buggy on steroids.

Well done. I will be building the Tamiya version, also in 1/35th. I also have a '63Bug "rag top" in my garage ready for spring.
