U.S. Armor primer color

I'm not a get it exactly accurate down to the smallest detail type builder, don't need that stress, but now that I'm starting armor I thought I'd try to get a general consensus as to what color primer was used on WWII armor before I start doing the chipping and wear on armor builds.

Pretty sure it's red oxide primer ,
