From what I have seen they appear to be slightly darker than the hull color. But I have recently found out the paints used to paint the 11 footer back in the 60s had a weird effect of appearing very different based on lighting and where the camera was positioned when the photos were taken.

I plan to use a medium grey and lighten it up if needed.
