People prefer to spend less money. If that means they get things that wear out sooner, they don't care because with the money saved, they can just buy another; manufacturers have realised this, and so cater to it. This has resulted in a vicious circle.

this country needed a businessman
No country should be lead like it's a business. Countries should to be lead in a way that caters for the needs of the people in them, not with a commercial mindset. But I guess it's been too late to tell that to the USA for … decades? centuries? something like that.

Simple fact is America cannot and has never subsisted on it's own.
No country can.
Countries remain friends and allies by sharing the planet and it's resources.
Free trade and cross border/continent manufacturing is what trade alliances and country alliances are built on.
It's easy to say it would be nice to build something 100% in America, but those that say this don't consider all the factors involved.
For example, of the aluminium needed in the US every year, at least 25% was sourced from Canada because there just isn't enough available in the US.
And to set up more aluminium manufacturing requires money, properties and materials which are also in short supply,
not to mention 10 to 20 years to build these factories and services.
Since factories are already set up in other countries, mass producing things at very low cost, why not take advantage of this
and get some of what you need outside the country, while you focus on more important things within the country?
You'll build trade friendship with another country and save a few bucks for more flagpoles at the Whitehouse.
Is anyone going to make sure the new huge flags are sewn in the USA?
Or will it be another Trump purchase from outside of America...like his Taiwan made Guitars or his Chinese made Bibles. [facts]
I don't fault him for buying these cheap trashy items from other countries where he's able to get them quicker and cheaper.
It makes business sense.
But he's lying to you all as he does it. Just sayin.

if we needed a business man , at least make it a successful one.

Exactly

And just to draw a line, this has nothing to do with conservative vs liberal, red vs blue etc...

Here for example is a take on tariffs without getting caught up in red vs blue team

In doing so, I want to be clear that I do not regard this as a partisan issue. Most recent Republican presidents have been ardent supporters of free trade while the Biden administration was happy to continue most of the tariffs imposed in President Trump's first term.

The trouble with tariffs, to be succinct, is that they raise prices, slow economic growth, cut profits, increase unemployment, worsen inequality, diminish productivity and increase global tensions. Other than that, they're fine.

To see this, consider what would happen if the U.S. imposed a blanket 20% tariff on all imported goods.

The immediate effect would be to raise prices for American consumers and cut output, profits, wages and employment for those who export to us, whether they be foreign farmers, manufacturers or commodity producers. We can argue about how the full cost of the tariffs would be distributed between these two groups but both would be hurt.

However, our tariffs would immediately be met by retaliatory tariffs on our exports by other countries. These would increase prices for foreign consumers and cut output, profits, wages and employment for U.S. farmers, manufacturers and commodity producers.

Tariffs would provide a new source of revenue for our government. However, if these higher tariffs were used to pay for cuts to income tax, they would be replacing a progressive form of taxation with a very regressive one. That is to say, income taxes disproportionately hurt the rich. Tariffs disproportionately hurt the poor.

and Family farm bankruptcies are on the rise again and we will most likely see another 2019 style tariff war related bailout for US farmers

What a bunch of crap he just said. Negative Nancy as usual. Y'all still don't get it do you? We're changing things in the whole world is going to change with us and it's going to be for the better. And only an idiot talks about all the tariffs Trump has imposed when he hasn't imposed any except towards China. The old guard of the American government was a money laundering corrupt basket of deplorables

I swear what happened to products that are made to last? Right now we live in a throwaway Society and everything we're throwing away is from China because it's crap.

That is a whole other issue.

I think it simply turns out corporations make more money when you have to buy a new appliance every 3 to 7 years than making things that last
Companies also can make a lot more money using cheaper materials like plastic over steel for example at the price of durability

Like that class action suit against Apple for planned obsolescence

Yes sir. There be truth to that statement. Shit, I still got my dad's old Black and Decker drill. You know the old one that first came out with the metal body? Still works. I still have my mom's old Kirby vacuum cleaner. And those things work so much better than the new crap nowadays with 16 air filters on it. Look at the new WeatherTech ad on TV. American ingenuity. American made and I have a set in my truck and they are excellent floor mats. Their new ad says. We never left.
And yes there's going to be some Stutter Steps at first. But look at all the companies coming back already. Now we're going to be building new factories opening up old ones building new Coal Fired electric power plants. We got a lot of work to do in this country and it's going to take a lot of people to do it. Holy shit I wish I was 18 Again.

Agree to disagree

I am simply speaking as the husband of a a small business who is now struggling directly as a result of the tariff wars

I know others who are as well

Hopefully this all ends soon, but I feel the long term impact is not going to be good

You're going to have to be tough and think ahead. Why are you having trouble? Ordering too much stuff from China so you can make a quick buck? Yes, there's going to be restructuring. There's going to be tough times but if you think ahead and figure out the path that's before you you're going to find out that everything's going to be just fine and dandy. I believe maybe even more than fine and dandy. No one likes change. They'll fight that man every step of the way. But you'll see in a year or two things are going to start looking up. I could be wrong. Let's wait and see. But I do know life is going to be a hell of a lot better than it was under Joe Biden. Worst president in US history. Traitor to the US. He should be put up against a wall and shot for treason

We're changing things in the whole world is going to change with us
What you're ignoring there is the question if the rest of the world wants to change with you. If Trump wants to fuck up the USA, as far as I'm concerned he can do that all he likes. But he's dragging the rest of the world along with it in a totally irresponsible manner, because he doesn't care about anything except being seen to be a Winner™.

Good example: the way in which the war in Ukraine has to end right now "or else we'll move on to something more important". WTF?! There is hardly a more important thing in the world than making Putin lose that war — because if he wins, it says to the world: "You too can steal somebody else's country if you want!" Just the kind of thing we had largely managed to abolish after the Second World War. But no, because Trump has declared he wants that war stopped sooner rather than later (which, I strongly suspect, was a playing-to-the-gallery move, because he does that a lot), he doesn't care that he's making Ukraine concede pretty much everything while at the same time asking nothing concrete from Russia.

Yes, this is the kind of world you would want to live in …

Well in this great country of ours United States of America used to be run by democrats. They completely messed it up. They completely let all the other countries out there take advantage of us. All the other countries out there and I'm saying just about every single one of them bent us over a barrel without any Vaseline. And I don't think Mr Trump is asking for much. All he wants is a fair playing field. And you want to know who started the war in Ukraine? Our Idiot Vice president Kamala Harris. Well, it's our turn now. And they don't like it one little bit. They're trying to stem what he's doing at every turn. And most of it is illegal. Torching Tesla vehicles? Riots? Letting in 15 million illegal aliens? Not paying attention to the laws already on the books? Well I can tell you right now two judges got in our way and they are going to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. And I applaud it. You naysayers out there that aren't used to change well get used to it cuz here it comes.

Kamala Harris started the war??
Omg that's a new one.
I fairly sure it was a communist dictator? You know, the types you hate. Or don't you hate commies anymore?
And don't start about observing laws. The convicted felon isn't known for his own law abiding behaviour. Or lately just ignoring the supreme court...
Now he wants to overturn your precious constitution and run for a third term!
Fuck me it's true, you can't educate stupid. :D:D:D

Trump has imposed when he hasn't imposed any except towards China.

Not exactly, it's at least 10 percent on all countries across the board right now.

The reason you didn't get charged on the purchase from Czech republic is because the value is below the minimum value exception, which I think is still in place for all countries except China.

(I will probably regret wading into this cluster of a thread. :))

Third term? Yeah I'd go for that. As long as we the people are behind it then I think we the people will get our way. It's not going to be up to Donald Trump whether he runs a third term or not. We the People. And now We the People are running this country instead of Washington swamp rats who miraculously walk into the job with $10,000 and walk out with 200 million. And yes. Kamala Harris. But I'm not going to get into that. You wouldn't understand.

But you're happy for a millionaire to walk in, earn millions by insider trading (and his mates) and screw your country over?
What's this felonious, bankrupt, liar ever done for you?

And remember that the orange baboon once said, after being asked if he'd run for president said, "I'd be a republican, because you can tell them anything".
It's on record. Look it up. :D :D :D

And you want to know who started the war in Ukraine? Our Idiot Vice president Kamala Harris.
Gotta disagree with you on that one. Harris was still only the AG of California in 2014 when the NeoCons and Obamunists alike encourged the Nazis in Ukraine to topple the elected president Viktor Yanukovych because he pushed back on the IMF and American corporate interests, refusing to allow Monsanto to flood their agriculture with cancerous GMO crops and poison the so-called "Breadbasket of Europe" with their evil seeds. The good ol' USA, the defender of freedom and democracy, really hates it when democracy goes against its interests elsewhere in the world, so a color revolution was used to oust the duly elected president Yanukovych because he was a member of the pro-Russian Party of Regions and favored stronger relations with Ukraine's neighbor, Russia. Who best to use to get rid of him than to support Ukrainian Nazis who hate Russia? There was John McCain giving speech at the Euromaidan protest in solidarity with the crowd that was being stoked by the anti-Russian Nazis. All it took was to have some snipers (CIA perhaps?) to shoot at some Maidan protesters and then have Yanukovych's government blamed for it. (Textbook false flag operation.) The Nazis are on video proclaiming victory in that although they were not the majority in the Maidan protests, they were the instigators leading the crowds. They proudly waved photos of notorious Nazi war criminal Stepan Bandera, whom Viktor Yushchenko even named a "national hero." This was overturned by Viktor Yanukovich, whom of course my country deposed. My country, the United States of America, the supposed champion of "democracy" in the world, overturned a democratic election that did not serve its interest.

He was deposed in February 2014, and anti-Russian incidents escalated. Anti-Maidan protesters in Odessa were attacked and fled into the trade union building in May 2014 to escape. The building was set afire and as people jumped from windows to escape the flames, they were shot or beaten to death as the fire department took a very long time to react and police did nothing to prevent the massacre. Ukrainians cheered this massacre of their fellow citizens on live TV. Then the USA got what it wanted in the form of Petro Poroshenko, who became president of Ukraine the next month, June 2014. Poroshenko was a big friend to the US political establishment, and VP Biden made sure to have his aberrant, crackhead son Hunter get a job on the board of Burisma Holdings, a natural gas firm there, despite him having zero knowledge whatsoever about natural gas. And remember that Biden bragged to the Council on Foreign Relations about how he threatened to withold USAID money to Ukraine lest they remove the prosecutor who was going after the corrupt oil company his son worked for (the very defition of "quid pro quo," which they accused Trump of). This is notoriously corrupt. And it was in 2014 that the US established those biolabs in Ukraine (which Russia took out on day one of their military action. (yeah if I was to invade a country, the first thing I'd take out are the "animal health labs." Those were bioweapons labs.)

This Poroshenko is the man who called for genocide of ethnic Russians and famously proclaiming "our children will go to school while their children hide in basement shelters," and the Ukrainian military bombarding its own citizens in the Dombass, intentionally bombing churches, schools, hospitals, etc. Ukraine's war against its own citizens has been well-documented, yet largely ignored.

The USA and NATO used Ukraine as a bludgeoning tool against Russia with their puppet Poroshenko in charge. Warmongers John McCain and Linsay Graham flew to Ukraine to give their support to the Nazi Azov unit in 2016. America's political establishment loved Poroshenko. Then Zelenksky was elected, who was essentially the Ukrainian version of Jim Carey, posing as a populist and riding on Trump's popularity fashion to get elected. He promised to put an end to the war in the Dombass, a promise he did not keep. Even leftist news outlets like The Guardian and Washington Post were writing articles about Ukraine's Nazi problem, yet they got their marching orders to shut up once Putin finally retaliated. It was Ukraine that kept breaking the Minsk Accords. Keep poking the bear and park weapons right on Russia's doorstep in violation of treaty and it's the Cuban Missile Crisis all over again. All Ukraine had to do was not try to join NATO and not park weapons pointed at Russia in their country and they could have enjoyed their genocide of Russians in Dombass for years to come. Putin waited patiently for 10 years before he acted, but we're meant to believe that he is the one who started this war.

So no, it wasn't Kamala Harris who started this war. This war began in 2014, which I am sure is only coincidentally the exact year that Biden's presidential pardons (which were signed by an autopen, lol) retroactively cover back to. What the USA has done to Ukraine since that year is frankly disgusting, but I'm sure our friend Locomotove here will claim "I stand with Ukraine" and repeat the corporate media talking point that Ukraine is somehow the bastion of European democracy when history sows that it has been anything but, especially with Zelensky refusing to allow elections, banning political opposition, banning Russian Orthodox religion, is responsible for the torture and death of journalist Gonzalo Lira, and on and on. Biden was committed to fighting Putin down to the last Ukrainian to protect his nice money laundering scheme, but now things have changed.

We're finally getting disclosure on the JFK assassination with more on the way, a promise for disclosure on the RFK and MLK assassinations too (I say add Malcom X to that too), disclosure of Epstein's Island visitors, the elimination (or at least drastic reduction) of animal testing, proper border security, actually addressing the geoengineering/chemtrail issue, and end to wars, eliminating horrendously wasteful government spending ranging from funding the Taliban to... I dunno... lesbian puppet shows in Algeria, and of course a stronger US economy.

But... "muh cheap stuff from China" and all that. Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, and Bernie Sanders are all on video clamoring for stronger tariffs to protect American workers. But now they're against it because... reasons. China has built its economy on the backs of slave labor and has broken all the rules for international trade, but who cares because... Orange Man Bad 'n stuff. American leftists used to be anti-war, anti-Big Pharma, anti-censorship, pro-fair trade, pro-tariffs, pro-working class. Forget about all that now. Now the sneer at the middle class, openly endorse war, silence people who do not fit their narrative, and are in love with Ozempic and useless COVID injections. Finally America no longer has a president who just speaks of funding wars but rather one that speaks of ending wars.

We're just going through a phase. You have to bend a branch to break it. You have to wiggle a tooth to loosen it. Things will balance out in time.

Well USA purchasing for us in the UK is out of the question as shipping costs are just ridiculous. I've looked at a Revell 1929 Ford Model A Pickup with motorcycle The kit price is just under $33, but the shipping is $73 so no thanks1
