Quayside

With painting buildings especially. The good thing with those, though, is that even if you add some paint or effects that don't look right, just adding some more will probably fix the problem and increase the realism because of the added layers.

Over the past week or so I've not been doing much modelling, but I continued with the quay today.

Earlier this week I made the ironmongery darker and painted the rails and manhole and drain covers. Today, I added more dirt and stains by using an old, worn-out brush to paint and "stab" (don't do this with a good one! :) ) a few shades of mud-coloured paint in little blotches before quickly rubbing or smudging some of the paint with my finger. Later, I used Army Painter Dark Tone (translucent black) to make more stains in the same way, and also to add more shading along edges and in corners, especially on the stairs. I did the shadows in much the same way as the stains, but using a good brush. Not too small a brush, don't be stingy with the paint and smear it into corners, then wipe away with your finger again, or in smaller corners with a colour shaper.

Here's more of a close-up:

Oh, before I forget: I took a few pieces of balsa, broke, sawed and cut them before glueing them into the water. When dry I painted them to make them dark like wet wood, using first a layer of Army Painter Strong Tone, and when that didn't turn out dark enough, I put on brown ink (from an ancient Games Workshop pot).

Thanks :) I'm not sure about the artistic eye, but I do know I want it to have realistic variations in colour, stains, etc. rather than being the same basic colour all over like you see too often with model buildings. I think the box cover photo (see the start of this thread) gives a good example, unlike many :)

Excellent work, Jakko, it looks a beauty! I like the weathering, very fine indeed.

Poor fellow, your life is a beach, but somebody's gotta do it, right? Me, I would prefer this any day, cause the boat launch is just 4 miles away, lol, in the summer, of course. This is at the top of my driveway, no neighbors in sight.

Lol, on a side note, when we first moved in the boys could sit on the camode and see the lake out the window. I am not joking. Pass 22yrs and the pines have stolen that view from the business end of the loo. I keep threatening to go cut down my neighbor's trees, but that would be bad form.

P.S. Keep rollin on the quay, it's looking great, Jakko!

No worries, Jakko, divert and redirect, then your spunk will arise anew. Dang, that sounded philosophical, and I ain't even a philosopher, ain't smart enough, lol.

Ruck On, Jakko!

It's not so much that I need time off, it's that I'm in a bit of a circle of having a bunch of things to do that I don't really feel like doing, but won't let myself start something else until I've done these. Which results in not doing any of them at all, and when I try to get some out of the way (like finishing the British French tanks or the quayside) I mostly sit and stare at them, paint a few small bits and walk away again.
