Name that movie

I need help naming a disturbing movie that just popped into my head. Black and white, 1950s I guess. A WW2 soldier has all four limbs blown off and loses the ability to see, hear and talk. He wears a box over his face either to protect him or so people don't have to look at him. He keeps doing this creepy head bobbing and someone finally figures out he's tapping out in Mores code "please kill me." I never saw the whole movie. I just remember see that scene and it freaked me out.. and I was like 30 at the time!
