So I was trying to find ways so simulate mud without using pigments or actual mud, and I thought i'd give sawdust a shot, its cheap or free, and usualy if you have access to it, you have access to alot of it

So essentialy what you need is sanded down sawdust, pretty much any other sawdust will be to bulky and wont clump up properly, once you get your sawdust, keep it in a pile near your pallet, and mix the paint color you want it to be, the paint you use to stick it on should be a bit thicker than the paint you put on when your doing base coats, to get the best effect when applying it to your tank, dip the brush in the paint, then in the dust, then back in the paint and apply to where ever you want it, if you do it right it will turn out like this http://www.scalemodeladdict.com/profile_pictures/13331_1365414744.jpg or this http://www.scalemodeladdict.com/profile_pictures/13331_1365414676.jpg

looks good, but a little too heavy for my taste, but where do you get sawdust from, and would sanded plastic work too

a tip recommended by AK Interactive is to use plaster of paris (also known as gypsum plaster) with paint/AK products. i use it for my builds and find that at the 1/35th scale it looks the part and you could use less for thinner mud or a lot for a really heavy buildup of mud.

you should be able to find plaster at most hardware/craft stores at reasonable prices

I used sawdust from a disc sander in my garage, but any sawdust made from sanding would work, its pretty much the same consistency as flour, and as far as the plastic pouder goes, im pretty sure the stuff I swept up had some plastic in it, but im not sure how straight plastic pouder would work
