Has anyone used a mechanics cabinet for their work area? It's been bouncing around in my head for a bit now. Not one of the huge ones. Something manageable and with the appropriate sized drawers for stuff like paint and tools. I see some at Lowe's for around $250ish, too steep for a whim. But maybe a decent used one.

No, but one of my requirements was to be able to take my tools on the road. I have two toolboxes. The first one is this artist's paint box that I got from Dick Blick years ago:

It's pine and sold unfinished. I stained it and sealed it, "for nice", as they say. I glued some magnetic strips to the underside of the lid and use them to hold some saws, tweezers, files, etc.

Then I picked up a larger Craftsman toolbox a couple of years ago on sale at Christmas. Here it is with the tray lifted out:

I keep my traveling stock of paints in the bottom, and tools and some other supplies in the tray that comes with the toolbox. I use a square baking pan as a tray to hold things in the bottom of the box.

I still keep reserve stocks of supplies at the bench. But I travel to meetings and meet-ups and can take my things with me this way.

No but I have one in the basement with tools in it. The drawers close slow and easy with just a little push to get them started so I would think it would work nicley for your idea.

IMG_2139.jpegI bit the bullet and got one. Now to task of sorting tools, paints, projects and junk. So much junk. Why do I keep so much instead of just throwing junk away.
