Soooo, I have had a model 395 Dremel for many many years ... still working (even the original brushes) but the bearings are getting noisy and it is time for a new one.

Not bad considering it has done everything from build models to cut the muffler off a truck.

I took a look on the Dremel website.

It looks like the 3100 might be the closest to the 395

The 4000 looks to be about 25% more powerful but is bigger (I think as there is no direct comparison on the site).

Any suggestions onto which might be "better"?

I would normally just go for the slightly larger one (4000) but I wanted to make sure it is not "too" large (I already have a die grinder and don't need another).

Thanks ... Mike

I need to look up my model number, but my old battery operated Dremel from the 1990s had a dead battery (duh, after ~30 years) and the new version did not allow 6 or 8 speeds, just low/high, both of which were too agressive for most plastic.

I replaced it with a small Chicomm version that I am happy with even if I bought it from Satan...

I have the Dremel 4000 with a flex shaft.
I really like the dial speed adjustment on it. And the flex shaft gives me better control.

Thanks! I actually have a flex shaft for my 395 and Dremel said it would fit ... might give me the best of both worlds! I can't even remember using my flex shaft, think I bought it when I bought the dremel ... might be a good time to give it a try. Thanks !!!
