This was Daimler-Benz's final WWII iteration of the 12-Ton Sd.Kfz 8 Sonderkraftfahrzeug. It featured a lightly armoured hull around the chassis and drive train and is believed to be a prototype of an armoured artillery tractor. Only one vehicle survived and was recovered from the Pilica River in Poland in 1999. It is believed that only a handful of these were ever manufactured, making this surviving example pretty unique indeed! It was all but forgotten until it was discovered and then restored to running condition in 2025. There are only three period images that can be find on the tinterweb and these may well be of three different vehicles.
Released in 2011 this is Trumpeter kit #01584 and was labelled as a 12T DB10 Gepanzerte. Apart from re-working a few prominent areas the kit is fairly solid, but it does omit the distinctive solid front tyres that it was found fitted with. These are available in resin, and I did build it with them as an optional fit, but the images below show it displayed with the regular pneumatic tyred wheels that come in the kit which the restored vehicle is generally seen fitted with.
The kit seems scarcely built and very rarely have I seen anything other than a plain dark yellow or box artwork finish. My paintwork is purely fictional with inspiration taken from the tri-tonal factory finished 251 halftracks seen in the final stages of the conflict.
I started this in 2013 and only managed to construct the chassis and running gear before it was relegated to the lack of motivation shelf. Inspired once more, resurrection began in early 2025 with completion in late summer. I hope you like it.
