Afterburner?

Can you post a link to some photos showing what you are trying to achieve?
 
For color, Testors model master enamels have a color called jet exhaust

The metalizers are awesome in to them selves BUT most of them are airbrush only and usually lacquer based, this is important if you are building a plastic model.

For head discolored metals I pull out my soldering iron for reference and use inks and watered down paints to tint a suitable metal colored paint.
 
The only two things that come to mind are lighting and camera effects to get the 'echos'

Or photoshop...
 
My view is that trying to simulate the flame and shock diamonds that appear visually behind a wet engine would be very difficult indeed!

Maybe transparent casting with tinted resin in various stages, completely bubble free and lit from inside in a dim viewing arena could make it work... 8)
 
If you want to "glow" the engine, primer white inside and use red/orange ink and it'll create a "glow effect". I dunno though how you'd simulate the fumes.
