Be careful with clear coating decals before adding them to the model. The coat(s) will help keep the decal together, but can make the decal thick, not blending into the finish and looking like a sticker. With decals, warm water is your best friend. I always use warm water with a drop of liquid...

Not to speak for Ian, but there really is no trick to the modulation. It simply provides a value break up of the various areas of the model, to make the finish more interesting and add depth to the look. It's a lot like highlighting, but on a broader scope, instead of just the raised details...

The trick with spraying FUTURE, is the air pressure. It can dry quickly if you are using too much pressure leaving a pebbly texture. Spray as low a pressure as you are comfortable with, applying a smooth coat, and it will work great.

I use craft paints quite a bit now. I blow them through an Iwata brush. The trick is to find the right mixture of water to paint, and to filter them well. i also use FUTURE quite a bit to thin my paints with great results. It's the Monogram kit with resin engine updates. The finish is FUTURE mixed with aluminum powder. Makes for a tough, shiny finish! Enjoy

Those silver areas are aluminum foil that once painted should look like canvas...I hope!

F-14 kits... Thanks guys! I'm using the Hasegawa 1/48 F-14D's. They are modeled to be 2 a/c from VF-213 final cruise. They will be posed in flight on the same base, sort of configures to be breaking from each other. The F-14 is a challenging build no matter what kit you use. They look so great...
