... imagine for a moment, our forum is hosted in a pub, just down the lane, and in walks a legend in his own time, and he imparts his knowledge to us.

Like the best of any craft, there is certainly a lot of work involved, but after a time there can be magic!

Have you ever been tooling away when something just clicked?
Or as with the Whaler diorama shown in another thread, completely astounded you?

I look for these moments... heck, they happened as a kid, they can happen now!

Forgive me but I've never heard of Seamus Ennis ...

Well, being the only one to ever reply to this thread, you can't say that anymore!

A famous traditional Irish musician, and his 'talks' about music conveyed so much of the imagination, the lyrical and the spirit, in addition to the finesse and technique involved.

Sometimes, that's how I feel about this hobby.

That really is interesting; I am a great admirer (and possessor) of Irish music, it's lyricism, 'musicality, ' pathos - and so many other facets. I own to so many Irish artists and advocates yet know nothing of him, I feel a research episode coming on!

@Airborne01! Nice! You probably know much more than I about the music!

I feel a ramble coming on... (fair warning!)

Several years ago, (1990), I bought a silver flute, (having played the sax in my youth - the fingering is very similar) and had a couple of years of lessons, mostly Celtic flute, and pennywhistle, of which I had an assortment - collected in my teenage years in the 70s. The 70s had seen something of a Celtic revival, followed by an explosion of world music in the 80s!

By chance, I happened upon a 2 CD set from Green Linnet records, and the spoken piece above (minus the annoying chatter) was on it.
I was taken by the melodious and rhythmic flow of his voice, and what he had to say in his own inimitable way.

Living here in Ottawa, my dad hailed from the Maritimes (Gamps spoke Gaelic and played the fiddle, with a collection of Cape Breton 78s that my brother has donated to a Cape Breton heritage society); Nanny was an orphan of parents newly arrived from Ireland, who could mesmerize you with tale after tale and laugh (and smoke) into the wee hours, given the teapot didn't run out!

My mum was French Canadian, from the Ottawa area, and their music had incorporated many a fiddle tune, both Irish and Scot. I have fond memories of French Canadian New Year's Day, at my great-grandmother's farm house, everyone with their signature 'song', my Perère calling squares, my cousins and I sitting in the stairs, raiding the food table.

My great-grand mother passed in 1966, a couple of weeks before my brother was born. I consider myself extremely lucky to have dipped my toes into the 'Two Solitudes' of English and French Canada.

Happy researching!

EVER?

Same day brah!

And why is the name not spelled Shamus?

Guess the same reason we do not spell the word that tried to explain Ingrish pronunciation as "fonix".

(sorry, I'm in a mood)
