I'm building a model of Titanic 1/400 scale. The top half of the hull has portholes imprinted so I want to paint them a colour representing glass. Is this a colour already existing or what would be your suggestion

Thanks

WELL firstly how big are the port holes ? an hull colour ? as i cant remember then when you answer sir i will give it some thouht on the subject as whats best for you on your model as on my big 1/72 scale warship i use brass portholes with real glass in them

glass reflects, it has no colour.
if the boat is on the ocean, the glass would reflect sky or water depending on your angle of view.
I might paint the 'glass' a sea green with a horizon line of white (fading upwards).

the glass area itself would be fairly small. the porthole frames eat into the area.

on the outside of the hull, you cannot really see anything of the brass porthole doors and frames.
- just the inner frame around the porthole opening.
all the frame and hinges would be internal.
everything is brass, and would have been polished for aesthetics.
However, the oval portholes swiveled at a center pivot, and they appear to have a painted frame around the glass.
This might have been white or black depending on the location?

wait!....paint a tiny little iceberg in each porthole window.

oh, that only works for one side of the boat, doesn't it?
well then, paint james cameron's face on the other side.

reflect sky or water
True, and I suppose on a grey, foggy north atlantic day, that might affect the colour as well.

Then there is the question of ambient light, dusk, dawn, high noon or evening might affect it too... think of the light coming from inside the ship, if you display it in the water, diorama like.

How about drilling them out? You can add clear plastic to the interior as well.
I drilled the port holes on my 1/200 USS IOWA, but skipped the clear plastic part. 17494913034745319015613819907080.jpg
