Thought I would start this while waiting for the Doughnuts and Burning Rubber GB to start.
I did the Y-Wing and really enjoyed it.

I got the wings to

I got the wings together. Trying to decide when to start painting.

Since it is a snap kit you can kind of assemble it and take it apart

I find skipping the instruction order and building the top half of the fuselage, and the bottom half as sub-assemblies and the wings as sub-assemblies works best, and then assemble them after painting

Just keep paint from getting on the mechanism that rotates the wings, or the pegs to join the body halves as it is a tight fit to begin with, and any paint will make it very hard to a snug get together when done. I masked those off while painting

Like this order from right to left ( I had an assembly line going at one point as I was doing all of Red Squadron)

How many did you build? Twelve? I currently have five, and was yesterday years old when I learned that each of them has the same number as stripes on the wings as their call signs.

I built one for each of the filming models except Red 10

so basically I have built seven representing
Red 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 12

here is a shot with Reds 1, 3, 4, 5 6

and Red 2 and 12 were completed later and can be seen in this album here

I have a kit I am going to use for Red 10 eventually, but kind of burnt out on X-Wings at the time, but will be revisiting

Now of course some X-Wings had two versions, like Red 3 which actually had a paint scheme for the hero vs the pryo/ Same strip markings, just very different weathering and painting on each

I was thinking of taking some of those other versions and turning them into the ones they never made models for like Red 7, 8, and 9

You know why Red 6 was afraid of Red 7? Because 7 8 9.

Does anyone know why there is only one smaller thruster piece B1 22? Did a "standard" X-wing have one single smaller thruster?

Maybe there's one X-Wing in one of the movies that has a shorter exhaust nozzle? Which is probably explained IRL by some mismatch of parts, or a mistake in cutting it, or something similar "but leave it in, who's going to notice?" :)

It's odd..... there are four of the C 19 part, one for each thruster, but step 1-7 is the only step that references part B1 22.

I have 12 X-wings to put together, so I could have 3 of them with the shorter nozzles if I wanted to.

FineMolds X-wing kit had a short thruster nozzle too. They explained that Red 5 had visual differences to make it it distinctive as the hero ship.

I FOUND THE ANSWER.

Red 3 has one shorter nozzle according to another site.

@Jakko helped me by calling it a nozzle instead of a thruster.

Yep

There were other differences as well between X-Wings. I think Red 5 (or 3?) has a different shaped nose and hatch greeblie on the back oriented upside down

I could be wrong so do not take as canon, but think it is also unclear when that shortened engine detail wound on on Red 3. I have heard it debated that at some point during production, or maybe even in between movies, it maybe got knocked off and hastily replace with the smaller version rather than intentionally made that way

Minor details really, but still cool that Bandai included some of those options

However, they did not include different engine covers/cans or body details

Some have different engine cans, or reversed, others have different panel lines etc...

depends on whether it is a "hero" or "pyro"

If you really want to go down the rabbit hole of the studio model differences search for X-Wing filming models and studio scale sections of forums

Most casual fans will not care or ever notice, but the "obsessive" purist/studio scale modelers get very particular about things like that

i.e. their version of rivet counters
