Lots of ways to make trees, especially amount the model railroad buffs. Look specifically at O and G scale articles. Simplest are the kits from Woodland scenic. Best are probably the "weed" and lichen trees by the late great John Allen, Malcome Furlow and other well known trail modelers.

I remember a excellent article on making yellow aspen trees out of weeds and yellow paper cut from a hole punch.
