Hey guys, I'm wondering if anyone has any tips/links for doing a desert diorama. This will be my first diorama, so I'm trying to get the basics down and what to use. I'm planning a Geonosis-type desert environment for my AT-TE walker I'm building. I want it fairly smooth, with rocks in some areas and maybe cracked earth where the walker is standing. I also want to add some tall rock walls/spires to one side.

So far, I've seen people use:

-fimo air dry clay: Someone in the AK magazines used this over cork to make a desert scene. It looks good for making cracked earth. No clue as to how easy it would be to blend it with styrofoam rock walls.

-styrofoam: I'd like to make some rocky spires, so this may work well. I don't know if I should try closed-cell or open-cell. I found this album that has close to what I want to do: http://public.fotki.com/Falconbacker/other-models/desert-diorama-135/15.html

-paper mache: I don't think this would give a smooth ground surface.

Thoughts?
