I found out that a lot of modelbuilders are making models and aftermarket parts for their models with 3D printers, i know i've been doing it for 20 years now.
Like a new hangatbay for the Polar Lights 1:350 U.S.S. Enterpise, the 1701A Refit, because the 5th movoe had a completely different hangarbay then the model came wih. i know there was an argentinian guy who sold a resin kit for it (Carlos Zangrado i believe), but i made a computer model of the hangar and from that a kit in flat parts with provisions for running landing ligth, light tubing along the walls and lighted windows in the control rooms, that you can fit inside the origianal model. including two type 5B shuttles.
which turns out is called the 2 footer at Skywalker Ranch by the makers and a 3 footer by the fans.
the original modelbuilders counted only the disc, the mandibles were an extension.)
3D printing is becoming a source for models, as well as a tool to perfect existing models.
Like a Milenium falcon the size of the ESB filming model. (2 footer for the makers, 3 footer for the fans and it is over 1 meter long)
A 66cm Serenity From firefly
The guard mechs from robocop.
Vipers from Battlestar Galactica 1978 and 2004.
The battlestars from both shows 2 footers
