Project: Boba Fett's Slave 1 (Fine molds)

Maybe, i didn't have any problem yesterday with the black layer, but i just checked and had to clean it.
I'll probably do another white pass tomorrow and see.

Anyway, even on the parts that look ok, the paint isn't smooth at all when you pass your finger on it.
Am i supposed to do something here, like sanding with very fine sand paper, or any other thing i don't know yet?

I would go take a look over on the painting thread or post that pic and ask a few questions. Someone will answer it over there and let you know what you are doing wrong.

Alright...time for an update.

Computer's broken (motherboard, graphic card, etc.)... "Fine, let's go modeling" ^^
Airbrush doesn't airbrush anymore (now i know why i was fighting against it, at last)..."Sell...ok, let's go modeling without painting, then."

So i did what i could, just let me take pictures and upload them to show where i'm at.

And here they are.

Basically, almost all the parts are black then silver primed, except the cockpit, still under construction.
didn't really want to go further on the paint job, because i had too little reference pics without my PC.

Upper hull and "skirt", or "wing", or whatever, have their basecoat. Looks white with the flash, but it's a mix of white, grey and green, and i didn't want to go too heavy on the green, because i have darker green layers to apply later.
I also tried to do preshading with my dying airbrush. Couldn't really have a thin line, so i went for light preshading, and i think it will disappear under layers.

I painted and glued the scracth builded "walls" for the floor acces ramp:

Destroyed the cockpit to build it again:

And, last but not least, the future star of the diorama, standing fett:
Cut his arms, built his rifle, put him in new position, built part of the poncho.
Still have to build the back of the poncho and paint the jetpack, also build a holster he has on his right leg.
And the antenna on his helmet, of course.

(And i also have to learn to take pictures with this camera, the flash is flooding everything with light and showing wrong colors in the end ;))

Looking good so far. A lot of work there.

As to the pictures, you might want to try shooting in brighter light, or seeing if the flash has other settings

Boba is looking good!!!

As for the camera, it probably has a no flash setting, if you have a tripod you can use the no flash setting and take your pictures that way. I take most of my photos without a flash. (And sometimes without a tripod!) The problem with not using a flash is that if you don't have bright light, you can get a blurry photo. That is where the tripod comes in, it holds the camera steady.

Hadn't thought of the tripod, yep. I do have one, so longer exposure and no flash should help, thx.

Next steps will be adding a small strip of styrene to make the canopy fit (BIIIIG problem on this kit, and not mine especially, i've seen it on almost every FM slave 1).
So since the canopy doesn't go to the hull, the hull will go to the canopy.

Then add layers of green on the upper hull, and pink then red on the skirt.

But i wanna try different techniques to get the chipping paint effect, and i'll try them on the tomcat i'm building aside (nothing special, nice plane but bad kit so i'll post it when finished).
I'm not fishing for techniques, i guess you know them all, i'll try:
-masking fluid
-the varnish trick
-maybe the salt trick too
-and one i haven't seen a lot on the net, but was using when i was drawing, i'll call it the "toothbrush trick" (now copyrighted and trademarked, Exar corp ;))

Ok, time for some tests (on a f14 tomcat): today, the chipping paint effect.

First, masking fluid: basic green, pink, masking fluid, red hull layer, then peel off the masking fluid.
http://s1219.photobucket.com/albums/dd440/ExarKun77/Tests/?action=view&current=DSCN1771.jpg
Went just fine, just have to buy cellulose based solvant to get my brush back (or apply the fluid with something else than a brush, of course).
I tried 2 different mix ratios for the pink (1/1 and 1/2), and 1/2 seems to be better, almost transparent but still there. i'll probably add red hull drops to blend both colors better.

Second, the hairspray technique: basic green, pink layer, matt coat, hairspray, red hull layer, let dry then put water were you want the chipping effect, and try to chip these zones.
http://s1219.photobucket.com/albums/dd440/ExarKun77/Tests/?action=view&current=DSCN1772.jpg
Not really what i expected. I know i let the red hull coat dry too long, and possibly did something else wrong, so i'l try again on another section.
I couldn't really get back to the pink layer nor the basic green one.
But it's a nice effect if you want subtle marks, i'll keep that in mind.

I know.
But the overall hull on the slave 1 sill require masking fluid in a lot of places, because you clearly see the pink in some places, and for now, i can't get back to it with the hairspray technique.
So i guess i'll go for masking fluid to define the shape of the different layers, and use the hairspray tecnique to get more detail/texture on painted zones.

Talking about the hairspray technique, here is my second try: (lot of overspray, i know, but that was not really the point of the test)
http://s1219.photobucket.com/albums/dd440/ExarKun77/Tests/?action=view&current=DSCN1773.jpg

This time, i didn't let the red hull layer set, and jumped on it asap.
But still, having a hard time trying to scratch it with an old brush.
I almost got what i wanted with a needle (the white spot in the upper middle), but i think i can do that without the whole hairspray setup, so...
There must be something i don't get about it. Maybe it's because of tamiya, since the technique is based on a water trick.

Anyway...i'll focus on getting the right colors now, and start the paint job soon.

Wow, thank you, i' like to be as good as what i've seen on your link.

About the hairspray technique, i think my main problem comes from tamiya, once they are airbrushed, water doesn't seem to dissolve them anymore, even if you go back shortly after.
I'll try to adapt the technique and use thinner to remove the upper layer a bit and see how it goes.

Apart from that, your link definitely made me consider using salt, especialy when i read this:
"the salt technique is one of my favorites and for the last few years I have been experimenting with hit every time I use it, including now on this vehicle where every time I spray a new coat, the salt releases more of its saline which is useful in achieve organic fades on the paint."

Interesting ;)

Loving this thread! I built the slave 1 last year and it was no easy task! so I know what your going through with the canopy issues etc, anyway keep up the good work! heres a link to mine. I didnt get the paint chipping right but I did use maskol (liquid mask) I flicked it from a tooth brush to get the tiny dots.

Yay, back online ^^ (lost my connection for a while, so sorry for the delay)

So, Weezer, thx for the link, i already came accross fichtenfoo's site, i'll look into the techniques.

John, don't worry, i had already seen your builds ^^

Anyway, back to modelling soon.
No real update on the slave 1, except a small one, i found my imperial officer figure, i'll post the pics or a vid soon.

And aside that, i was able to get my hands on a small compressor, making less noise than the one i had till now, and allowing to also choose the pressure i want to.
It even came with a simple action airbrush, probably better than the cheap one i was using.

Anyway... see you soon, i have a lot of reading/answering to do now on the forum ^^

The slave 1 isnt an easy one..i've never done it solely for the reason of its exreme amount of chipping and i wasnt sure i i could actually pull that off it the Fine Molds scale. I REALLY like your mini carbonite Han!!!
