Hello everyone!

This is gonna be an unusual post on this forum but I really need your help. My boyfriend's birthday is coming soon and I've been thinking of buying a kit as he's really into WW2 modeling. As far as I'm aware, he only does 1/35 scale and particularly likes resin figures. I know that he mostly has Alpine miniatures and would like more, but he's open to doing anything. As someone who knows absolutely nothing about modeling, I would really really appreciate some specific site or kit recommendations. Thank you so much in advance.

As far as kits go, considering the circumstances, I would look at the Japanese company Tamiya's WWII armor kits. You would get a good blend of buildability and detail, as well as a wide range of subjects. They're also readily available in pretty much every hobby shop in the world, as well as online. And Tamiya's newer figures are excellent; they have adopted taking digital photos of models in uniform and gear and then 3D-sculpting the masters used to make the molds. As good as many resin figures out there. As for Alpine Miniatures, you can find them readily online, too.
Hope that helps!
Best regards,
Brad

Kia ora fellow kiwi.

I can highly recommend BNA Model World as I'm a regular on their eBay.au store listed under "A Modeler Club", also another aussie model supplier I've bought from is HTDirect who has a store listing on Trademe. I'm not much into miniature figurines myself but more the 1/6 scale sci-fi figures and statues.

As for local model shops, there are a few that stand out to me on the "most impressive" scale, here's a list of some that I've purchased from for different subjects:

Hobby City Plastic models, diecast models, miniatures, RC models, modeling tools, figures, paints etc. Good customer service, good pricing, fast postage.
Acorn Models Plastic models, diecast models, RC models, modeling tools, figures, paints etc... Good customer service, pricing is hit and miss though as they deal with imported and branded products, fast postage. I find they're more useful for modeling materials and spare RC parts.
Hobby Station Their main focus is RC (Radio Control) kits and supplies, they offer only a few plastic model kits in a small group of genres. Good customer service though.
Franklin Hobbies They offer a lot of different genres and brands, check with stock before ordering as they pre-order items and only stock a few physical kits onsite. Good customer service and fast shipping.
Frankton Models Various model kits including military kits, best to check availability as they seem to run out of kits really fast. Good customer service and my local here in the Waikato.
Bay Hobbies Good selection of model vehicles including slot cars, not many miniature military figures though, more focused on Warhammer, model train dioramas and landscaping supplies (including little civilian people figures). Good customer service.
Plastic Models Highly recommend this dealer as they offer a lot of military kits including miniature figures in various scale sizes. The site is easy to navigate and each subject is separately categorized. This site will more than likely have what you're after. Good customer service too and fast shipping.

Also try the local Trademe listings as I've come across a few gems and rare model kits there, plus a couple of the sites mentioned above also have listings on there too. However, a little heads up about purchasing from a retailers store on Trademe. Depending on vendor, the prices will be marked up compared to buying direct from their website as Trademe fees are added to the items to cover services on the site.
Unless you can find a private seller on Trademe who will offer you a bargain, be prepared for the added extra cost.

I could go on posting at least another dozen local stores but these one's are my regulars for different reasons, kits, kit parts, paints, thinners, tools and supplies. There are also the local independent small business's and op-shops of which are usually stocked with the rarest of the rare model kits and toys, these are usually goldmines but unfortunately these shops very rarely offer postage and are instore pickup only.

I hope you find what you're looking for.

Good luck.

I'm happily married for 33+ years now, but you are a keeper!

I want to repeat what rastanz said, hope you find what you are looking for. If you could take any pictures of models he has made maybe we could help guide you as it regards subject matter based on his specific interests.

Ahahah I'm only an honorary kiwi thanks to my boyfriend.
Thank you so much for all the store recommendations. I would've tried some local small businesses but I am curently away. But I'll definitely take a look at the sites.
Again thank you!

Ahahaha thank you! I know how passionate he is about modeling and I'd like to try and learn more to get him something he will actually enjoy.
I'll definitely try taking some photos or get more details without ruining the surprise.

All good, it's a kiwi custom to adopt within the first 5mins of meeting :p
I forgot to mention, all these business's deliver nation wide tracked via courier post, some have even expanded to international shipping on most of their stock (except flammable goods).

Take a wander when you can, hopefully you'll find something.

I feel safe to say anything from Meng or Tamiya is good, but tanks (Stug is a self-propelled gun but close enough) are not my forte, plus it is likely he has built one of them.

There are many good armor builders here, I'd start with @Jakko, he really knows his...ummm...stuff.

YES Edbert is right Jakko is the person to ask an i'll ask my freind who in my opinion was an exspert on stugs for the best stug kit ok ? an will get back to you shortly if you wait ma-am

Thanks for the vote of confidence, guys :) StuGs are not my area of expertise, but I'll take a stab …

@zuzuiszen A small problem with your question is that there is no simple "best" in model kits. For some people, "best" means "most accurately detailed" while for others, it may means "easiest to assemble", "with the most options" or something else still. There are many different brands that have released kits of StuGs, but not all are created equal. Some are simple to build but lack detail, others have a lot of detail but are difficult to build, etc.

Checking BNA Model World's web site for 1:35 scale StuG kits they also have in stock, that limits your choice a lot, which is probably a good thing :) I see they have StuG kits by Takom, RFM (Rye Field Model) and MiniArt. All of these will be good, basically accurate kits.
  • The Takom kits will be the easiest to build, but will still look good. They also happen to cost about half of what the others do :) (BTW, the "2-in-1" on one of those kits doesn't mean you get two models in one box. Rather, it means it includes optional parts to build one of two different versions.)
  • The RFM kit has a full interior and working tracks, both of which makes it a ton of work to put together — don't get that one unless you're certain he enjoys this kind of kit.
  • The MiniArt kits will have a lot of parts (because that's how MiniArt kits are), again making them a lot of work to build, and that goes even more so for the two marked "interior kit".
TBH, if you're not sure what your boyfriend prefers in a kit, I would recommend either of the two Takom ones, just to be on the safe side that you're not giving him a kit with a lot of tiny parts when he doesn't actually like models like that.

WELL Jakko ive asked BOB the stug what he thinks as he is an exspert on stugs but still waiting for an answer from him on the subject
