Hi Guys

Here is my third entry in this years competition, another diorama!

I was trying to find a car to build, but couldn't find any that I fancied so another dio it is!

This will be a small diorama showing a Panzer 1 during the Battle of France crashing through a wall.

I am going to try and put plenty of interest into a small space, fingers crossed.

Here's the proof of entry pic

I started up by making up the base of the Panzer, which is the tiny but so far excellent Dragon kit. This is so I could set the size and position of the base and the wall.

There was plenty of sanding of mould seams to do, but no problems with the kit so far

I have had to leave the tank aside as I want the suspension and the tracks to take the contours of the wall it will be rolling over, so on to the base next
I picked up 500 these individual bricks and as I want the wall to look as if it has been smashed into I decided a realistically built wall would suit the best
20140416_211745.jpg

So to fix the bricks I have used some Vallejo sandy paste which I had knocking around as cement
Heres the first run

And the finished wall
20140418_142403.jpg

The reverse side of the wall has had a fine coat of wall filler to represent a layer of render
20140418_143907.jpg

Next I used some air drying clay to make individual cobbles for the road side. The last time I tried this I used one slab of clay and impressed blocks into it and it actually bent the MDF base so to play it safe this time I cut the blocks individually off the base and glued them on one by one and no bending has occurred! It also meant I could get a more uneven look to the cobbles

The rendered side was first painted with acrylics to give a worn look and then I painted in an advertising sign on by hand again with acrylics

The sign and rendering is the reason for building the wall first before knocking a tank sized hole in it, hopefully the finished scene will have part of the wall with the sign on still standing!
I also started painting up the cobbles too.

I think I will have to pretty much finish the base and the broken wall before I can get onto the tank itself

Thanks for looking

wow, that groundwork is already looking killer! Love how you did that wall. And the little panzers are always fun to see beeing built

Cheers

This is really cool the bricks and groundwork look amazing keep up the hard work

Thanks for the comments guys, I think it really helps the end result if you're into a project, which I am with this one!

I love being off work I managed to get a load more done today, first I weathered the wall up with a mixture of acrylics and enamel washes and also a little bit of moss

I also did a similar process on the cobbles
20140420_131250.jpg

and then came the tricky bit, cutting a tank sized hole in the wall. Luckily the paste I had used for cement stayed flexible enough to cut around each brick as I wanted to with a scalpel.

20140420_131336.jpg

The rest of the wall will be broken up once the tank is built as I want to put debris over the road and tank.
I also prepped the other side of the wall which I want to show with overgrown plants and foliage etc... so I started off with some wall filler mixed with brown and black paint then sprinkled soil and placed in some stones while it was still wet
20140420_131345.jpg

The next step is to get the running gear and tracks to look like they are convincingly driving over the wall. First I glued the suspension bogies in the correct position
20140420_131725.jpg

20140420_131737.jpg

Then add the (magic) tracks, continually positioning back on the base as I added each run to make sure it looks right

I've just now finished off the build which went quickly and easily, it is a small tank after all. I debated whether to add a figure or not but have decided to go with one, which I have mocked up but still needs some work yet. I think I may end up making some arms before I'm done

Hi Guys, Easter hols nearly over so I thought I would share todays progress

I concentrated on the rear part of the base first, I used loads of Mininatur grasses and other bits and bobs for foliage. Also I bent a piece of thick foil to make the corrugated sheet and a scrap pulley from the spares box. The grass under the sheet was modelled shorter and also yellow as if it has been hidden from the sun. I've still got more finessing to go yet though

I also started painting up the Panzer, Vallejo German grey from the airbrush then the brown e=was painted in by hand

Back to work tomorrow so the fun will slow down a bit!

Thanks for looking

Wow man, you are doing quite the job on this dio. I love how you actually built the brick wall and then smashed it. Plus, that little tank is looking quite fierce (which is a big compliment considering how tiny it was). ;D

Wow leighbo that's some fast work on this. And good work too, that wall looks sweet, shame you had to knock a hole in a perfectly good miniature brick wall! ;)

that wall is looking great fella, if you zoom in the photo, one would think it's the real deal! Nice paintwork on the I as well

Cheers

Hi guys, thanks for the comments.

It's surprising how fast you can complete a project when you're really into it!

I have been working on the weathering this week, layers of enamels for dust and dirt and then more layers of pigments, sorry didn't take any photos of these stages

Then yesterday I got the figure painted up with acrylics

Then spent today refining the base with some extra mossy bits and foliage, before the final step breaking up the remainder of the wall and trying to scatter it realistically over the base and front of the tank as if it had just been knocked down.

And that finishes this build off, here's the pics

Thanks for looking and all your comments

FREAKIN AWSoME...From concept to completion!!! Hats off to you sir. That is a great dio...Luv the wall, :)

This dio is awesome! The groundwork is first rate. The wall and the rubble add so much to the action we can clearly see that this tank is on the offensive. Well done my friend.
