Chris at the end of the day I'll be okay with it. New steps, new trial and errors. The masking tape over the decals like you said were my main enemies here. Funky decals....well that's something else and out of my control. Now there are plenty of AM decals out there for me but that would mean getting all my previous work off. It most likely would mean completely stripping the model clean of paint and starting the process again. A task I would like to avoid.
On a better note I did manage to find the blue roundel color with a bit of research. About halfway down the page is the "Colors" section of the roundels.

And came up with two choices my LHS may have in stock. First the Tamiya Blue X-04 (which I doubt he'll have) and the Humbrol Lufthansa Blue 198. The Humbrol I have a good chance of scoring.
Suddenly things are looking up! ;D
