Howdy, Edbert.  If that fig doesn't have a seal coat you can give it an oven cleaner bath, brush the heck out of it and go at it again.  If it were me, I would start over and work it from there.  But, if you can recover it, go for it.

I wouldn't fret about the little stuff while you're learning, it's going to take time and practice, and this fig is a great one for it.
