M1A1 Abrams "Iraq 2003" 1/35 scale

Here is a small update. I added the spare tracks to the side of the turret and added some rust color to show some weathering. I am not finish yet still have some small details to work out (learn)...

Well here it is. I decided not to do any dust effects because I really like it the way it is. I still have plenty of time to change my mind though and add some stuff to it. Tell me what you think of it, and remember, this is only my 3rd build. LOL!

I'm loving the look. Totally clean build. Only constructive criticism I'd have would be that spare track. It looks a little bit toooooo pink. Could be my monitor though...

Looks great, subtle weathering would be ok and I do agree with Badger, the spare tracks really does looks like pink :)

it looks great Rick but even a pic wash and some dusting of the lower half would make it pop.

A very nice clean build. I agree with a few of the others that the spare tracks are a bit too pink

Yea it does look pink. I was searching for rust color combinations and one I found was this mix. In the cup it really looked like rust until it was applied lol. I don't have any rust pigments or anything, all I have is my paint. I am going to have to play with the colors a bit to find the right one.

do have any oil paints? use raw umber and grind some earth tone pastels it would create a rust tone :D

Ok I have given the spare tracks an update due to it looking like a pink color. I took some of the oil paints I had and started mixing them until I got what looked to me as a rust color. I got the instructions from the web and now it does not look pink now. Tell me what you think or do I need to do something else. I like the fact that it looks somewhat bubbly kind of like rust when it gets old and is the beginning stage of chipping.

I think you did a great job on the tank and especially as its your third model! But to be honest I still don't think it looks right, better but not quite there yet. Perhaps paint it back to black (or dark grey) and then buy some cheap pastels from an art store grind them up and gently brush on the reddish/brown/orange tones until your happy with the look, this will achieve a much more realistic look. Also you can use the sand coloured pastels to achieve your dust look you were after. But it's your model only do what makes you happy, as I've said I think you've done a great job and I think it looks the part! ;)

I agree. Great job on completion....it's not about perfection! I'd say they need to start off a dark metallic color or a grey base. Pencil lead dust makes a good look, rub that in and put on a very thinned down coat of rusty brown and red. That'll give you that surface rust effect. For the all over dust, most easy would be a pigment powder from Mig/AK. Just brush it on all over with a semi-stiff brush and wipe it in realistic directions.

Even as it stands, it's definitely worthy of applause. Extremely fast and Accurate! 8)
