Hello,

Let me share with you the build of this huge kit i started a lil while ago but that's still on th bench.

Let's go for a Trumpeter #00215 1/35, Karl mortar. I'll depict a late chassis one with the short 600 mm barrel

Here is the box :

img83010.jpg

The camo will be a 3 tone, the beast will be the "Ziu" as it was in Warsaw siege

The chassis will be down and rest on the ground as seen in firing configuration.
Ejector pin marks everywhere !!!!!!!!!! (2004 Trumpeter kit you idiot !)

Loads of options : aluminium 600 mm rounds, photoetched parts, 2 chassis, 2 vynil tracks sets...

Goodies I've added

Pin marks everywhere !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The notice does not mention any of these

There are some uneasy marks to fill in, putty would be a mess to use there, so I used plasticard instead (0,25)

Then another seam that required its putty load

May the Putty force be with you !

Once sanded

Even rail loading/unloading points needed some putty !

Once sanded glued in place, that was worthwhile IMHO

The structure where the mortar will stand. Pretty straightforward, with little putty needed :

I also started the howitzer with alu gun from Jordi Rubio, kinda massive !

The mortar cried for a rough casting, as the original's pics show. I had a try at this texture. I started by masking off the parts that need no rough cast

This is what I used

The shells dolly got its PE parts, the handles are still missing tho' :

With a heavy shell on :

The superstructure :

img_8513.jpg

The mortar has had a homemade wiring around the gun tube as well as a red primer coating that will remain uncovered by the 3 tones german camo scheme :

Silencers textured with cement, plus they got some PE parts :

img_8516.jpg

The body has been partially preshaded black, and outside platforms + rails were glued in place on both sides :

img_8517.jpg

The tub's inside received the red primer after a black preshading :

To give an idea of how it looks :

With a 2 euros coin for scale effect

With a fig from the box :

This is where I am at the moment.

Next update will be painting the mortar.

Best regards,

Richard

Wow nice work Richard!

Can you explain to me/us how you get that cast surface look please, I just use glue and then stipple it with an old brush.
But you result looks very good! I would like to try that.

Zappa

Thanks zappa

To obtain that rough cast look I stirred / mixed 2 Tamiya putty nuts (1 white & 1 grey) with acetone.

The mixture must be liquid but not too much. A little thicker than water, with no paste sticking to the old brush used to stir.

Then I applied carefully (stippling it with my old brush) 3 coats of the mixture, allowing each one to dry before applying next one.

After 3 layers I was pleased enough with the effect.

It brought a more rough effect than the one achieved with glue. You can compare the 2 different effects with the exhaust silencers pics in my post, that were stippled with tamiya thin cement (green cap).

Richard

Thanks for the info Richard!
Like I mentioned I always use the glue ( tamiya green cap) method.
But from what I see in your pics, your way gives it a bit more texture.
I'll try your way for sure thanks!

Zappa

This will look awesome as you already shown such attention to details. I certainly look forward for more.

Hi,

Thank you guys.

Befor painting I had a look at the tracks. I bought the Trumpeter ones and did not pay attention but the hole on each pad is not drilled out

I had to drill em out, true that there are only a bit less than 200 ... ;D

Next step is paint.

Hello,

This afternoon I primed the model with Dunkelgelb.

I used Vallejo primers (200 ml cans just to make sure I'll have enough for this huge kit)
The problem is this Dunkelgelb is known to be way too green, so I mixed it up with desert tan of the same brand. After many tests, I thought the good match was 25% 74604 (dunkelgelb) for 75% desert tan (74613).

Hi fellas !

Here are some fresh (smell paint ?) news with both brown and green sprayed. These colors are Tamiyas, XF-58 for green and brown XF-64. I added X-8 yellow drops to lighten these colors a bit.

Hi Gents !

Well that is a little while since you havent had news from Karl, better late than never, right ! Here are some pictures of my progress.

The driver tub is still to be completed (no dashboard at the moment...), I have to add a buff weathering coat to the tracks and rollers, add 1 or 2 figures, paint the shell...
