Hello all joined the forums wanting to learn more about scale models. I used to do this hobby as a kid and forgotten why I've stopped. Getting a kit this Friday coming so I'm very excited to be getting back into into the hobby. Also trying to get my nephew into it as well since he spends all his spare time gaming. I look forward to getting to know people over time and share models that I make.

Welcome aboard ! ;D

What kit are you planning on starting ? look forward to some pics !

Cheers ,
Uru

I'm thinking about doing the Aoshima Mazda RX-7 FD3S but I never heard of Aoshima. Link for the kit is here: https://www.scalehobbyist.com/catagories/Model_Cars/1998-mazda-rx-7-fd3s/AOS00048955/product.php

Aoshima is huge .
Should be a pretty straightforward build .

Scale Hobbyist is one of my favorite sources .

I'll be looking for it in the AUTOMOTIVE ;)

Glad to hear Aoshima is a good brand, that being said are there any brands I should be aware of that is not very consistent or just don't make quality kits? Yes I love the prices on scale hobbyist I can tell I'll be using them quite often.

Thank you for the warm welcome Quaralane glad to be here.

Every manufacturer seems to have it's problem kit or kits .

The best approach is to ask around about a specific kit you're interested in ...

You can always ask here - or -- a very good resource is https://www.scalemates.com/ .
you can find a lot of info on what's available and links to reviews of the specific kits with your options from the after-market vendors etc .

did a google search and no reviews on the kit and I checked that site as well. I'm still going to take a chance on it, worse case scenario I can use it as practice to develop and improve my skill.

You won't have any problems with it .

Aoshima is like the other Japanese companies , Fujimi , Tamiya , Hasegawa -- good fit and instructions , good styrene .

I'm familiar with Aoshima in 1/700 ships . Aoshima and Fujimi both are big in ships and autos are the other big genre for them .

That's a simple curbside kit so it's a good start-back at a decent price .

good to hear, I'm going to build a lot of car kits and probably a few fighter jet kits as well since I used to be an F-16 mechanic in the air force.

another question I see a lot of people on youtube recommend the Tamiya extra thin cement would that be fine for me or should I look for something thicker til I get better?

Extra Thin rules ! ;D

It's a really " hot " cement -- it's exactly 50% acetone and 50 % butyl acetate -- so a little dab will do .

The big advantage over cements with larger quantities of plastics in them is it's capillary action allows you to just hold the parts together and a dab of the cement will travel around the joint .

Some plastics will work better than others -- The Japanese brands above use styrene of a formulation that performs very well with it .
I've encountered plastics like in the Hobby Boss SdKfz 222 I'm building now that don't like it .
.. and some older , pre-factory move , Mini-Art kits also .. . the stuff is spread around .

It depends on the plasticizers and other fillers / colorants used .

You should have some heavy body ( brush-in-bottle ,, not the gooey-tube ;) ),, like the Testor's or Plastruct around in addition to the Extra Thin -- but I'm pretty sure you'll be using the Extra Thin the most .
The thicker glues are good for problem styrene , large joints or if you need a stronger joint .

No ,
This one next to it ,, with the brush applicator

https://www.scalehobbyist.com/catagories/Paint_and_Construction/liquid-cement/TES00003502/product.php?s=4&t=2&u=0&micr=793&pg=1&ppp=48&sb=stocknumber&so=a&man=TES

-- you can use smaller brushes with it as needed -- clean em up with laquer thinner or acetone .

I've never used this regular Tamiya - https://www.scalehobbyist.com/catagories/Paint_and_Construction/plastic-cement-20ml/TAM00087012/product.php?s=4&t=2&u=0&pg=1&ppp=48&sb=stocknumber&so=a&man=TAM

It's probably similar -- - the MSDS is always a good source .
I had a page bookmarked that had a fantastic summary of MSDS for all the Tamiya , Testors etc stuff we use ...
But the guy changed the page up ,, and only has a few things now that they evidently sell :p

so you got to just Google it down . --- for 2 bucks , it's worth checking out though ;D

.. ... they're a BLAST to knock-over on the bench !!

ok sweet I'll go with the tamiya thin and the testor heavy body. I'm planning on going with this knife https://www.scalehobbyist.com/catagories/Tools/soft-grip-knife-set-w-5-blade/ZNA00039920/product.php

I stopped at a local hobby shop yesterday that I just discovered. The shop is called Hub Hobby Shop and I ended up snagging a different kit and supplies from them. I picked up the Tamiya Nissan Skyline GTR (R32 Chassis), kit number is 24090. Very pleasant guys to speak to and very knowledgable.

Nice ;D

You're lucky to have a local hobby shop ! --- they're an endangered species ... :(

What color are you doing the Skyline ? - TAM00024090_0_l.jpg

I think I am too lucky there is another one however they also do Skateboards, R/C and scale model kits. The one I got my stuff from only sells scale model stuff which is why they're my source of supplies from now on. For the skyline I'm thinking a nice metallic blue or Purple (maybe an in between of the two where you can't tell if it's blue or purple) with Bronze wheels.
