Gun Trails & Washing

I am working on a 1/48 P-51D. I would like to know of any advice on adding gun trails down the wing. I also want to try using some wash. I saw the effect on the Tamiya wash and I liked the level of detail. Any tips are welcome.

For gun trails I normally use a soot powder from one of the Tamiya weathering master kits I have, before I got them I used artist pastel colors.

With the washes I generally use an oil paint that has been thinned down, if the wash gathers in an area or is too heavy looking it takes just a few minutes with a thinner to fix.
