I have always liked the Star war saga, so I decided to start building the space craft. The 1/72 scale seemed appropriate since I am limited on storage spaceDSC00104_zpsd66ec857.jpg

I started with the cockpit. I had to shave down some of the plastic on the instrument panel to get it to transmit light,

I created the engine glow effect using a 3mm straw hat UV led in series with a 5mm orange flicker led. I think the engine fire effect worked pretty well.

I used black to light block the engine and then spayed white to reflect engine effect better.

I wired the engine by running wire between wing surfaces and through the center post. If I did this again, I would not run the wire through the center post, I would use a separate hollow rod and mount it in the fuselage were it wouldn't show.

Ready to prime.

I wanted to try the new Badger Stynlrez primer. The primers are thick ,so I had to thin to shoot through my Krome. The primer dried to a very smooth durable surface. I was able to handle the model within a few minutes without damaging the paint or scratching the surface. I used all three primers to get a modulated effect. The gray was exceptional, the white seemed to sputter and splatter some. The one drawback to the primer was it lifted up in some places when I used blue painter's tape. My Vallejo primer does the same thing even after curing for several days. Maybe it's just me and the way I'm applying the primer. I am still committed to using acrylic primer, I need to prime indoors without running everyone out of the house. Just need to figure out what going on and correct the problem.

I created mask from the decal sheet and applied the negative, then the positive mask. I used my Silhouette Cameo to cut the mask into Mactack vinyl.

This image shows how the primer lifted. Fortunately I was able to repair and re-spray the area.

Now for painting and weathering. I used an oil wash and it seemed to darken everything to much.

Next I will work on a Y-wing, I now have the Millenium Falcon, but I'm not in any hurry to tackle that model.
Thanks again, all comments welcome

Great build ! I've always loved the X-wing... but then, who don't? ;D

I don't mask much, but I've never had any paint lifting with Vallejo primer.

I usually wet sand the model with 1000 grit paper to give the primer something to bite into, and I thin the primer about 50-50 with Vallejo thinner. I apply it by three successive light coats with about 5 min between them.

Hope that helps !

Thanks DJSLY74 and Julien for the comments. I thought about using fiber optics in the instrument panel, but at 1/72 scale it was way to small for me,I had to use an extremely small SMD Led just to light the panel. To even
see the gauges and screens on the decal I used I had to use magnifying glasses. Maybe on the Ywing I will try fiber optics. I really love the Vallejo primers. I spray them right out of the bottle. They lay down a beautiful flat layer of color. I use them whenever I can, The new Badger primers are very thick, to me you have to thin them just to get them through the airbrush. They are vey tough and don't scratch easily. I can see using them on some projects that need constant handling. Thanks again for the comments.

That's a very nice X-wing! Love the conservative weathering. Looks very "studio".

Looks like Wedge's call marking, Garven's paint, Luke's droid... interesting red wing hybrid. Cool lighting.
