[COMPLETED] Trumpeter 1/35 USMC LAV-AT "Operation Desert Storm"

Re: [WIP] Trumpeter 1/35 USMC LAV-AT "Operation Desert Storm"

Thanks guys... I bought some .015 wire to make the masts out of, looking at the schematic, it looks like I need to find something that tapers more. I guess Ill have to work on the stretched sprue thing some more.

The LAV AT I am building has 3 antennas as far as I can tell, one at each of the aft corners, and another near the exhaust. Looks like the LAV-III would have the 2 masts though.

Re: [WIP] Trumpeter 1/35 USMC LAV-AT "Operation Desert Storm"

It is true the fibre glass whip is tapered!

Stretch sprue would make that an easier task but if all you
Have is some wire, that will be fine!

As for the Antenna mount locations on your model! Those vehicles come in various flavors!

If you have followed the picture I included, previously seen here! it's fine, it has Two radios! The third mount is capped off!

Do me a favor! Don't lean the masts down that far!

If you were to include another antenna! I would look for pictures of one with a UHF stubby to talk to Appaches or A-10 ! But not all vehicles would have this..... You are better off leaving the 3rd antenna mount empty!

Re: [WIP] Trumpeter 1/35 USMC LAV-AT "Operation Desert Storm"

While leaning the masts down that far is a bane of existence to the vehicle maintainers, as it stretches the wire inside the vehicle, on that particular version it is necessary to do that so the back blast of the missile firing doesn't shear off the antenna completely.

Some people say leaning the antennas over on a tank like that makes it "less" noticeable, but I think something that is no more than about an inch wide, looking at it from even a mile away, isn't going to be any more noticeable.

Heck our troops put IR glow sticks in water bottles and tape them to the top of the antenna so they can be identified by other allied troops.

Re: [WIP] Trumpeter 1/35 USMC LAV-AT "Operation Desert Storm"

Nice! If I had to say anything..... The wheels might need to be adjusted! With the rest of the body!

Not entirely necessary! But could help!

As it is your first AFV, It turn out pretty darn good! You might get the bug?

Keep it up!

Re: [WIP] Trumpeter 1/35 USMC LAV-AT "Operation Desert Storm"

Thanks All

Yeah, I realized what I did wrong with the wheels after it was too late. I was following the instrutions pretty much to the letter. They have the builder place the transaxle parts before placing the uprights, I did that but didnt have the axles properly alligned, because of that, they interfered with the placement of the wheels. With the LAV-III, Ill simply use tape to temporaritly hold the transaxles in place til the uprights are placed. Once everything is lined up, Ill use some Tamiya Superthin to secure the transaxles to the chassis.

The LAV III also features an overall color, so Ill be able to experiment better with the filters. I need to get some winged things built first for ARC Canadian Wings GB and a few contest special themes. Cheers all.
