Hello everyone! I am currently deployed and need something to do in my downtime. With limited access to paints and equipment I decided to do this Bandai model. I have never seen the show it's from, and only know a little of the back story. Doesn't matter, since the first time I saw this model I thought it looked really cool.

Model arrived today and after I reviewed the instructions, with the help of the translator in my phone, I see that it can be lit! Wish I knew that when I ordered it, because now it will be a few weeks before the lights get here.

I'm going to build it as much as I can while waiting for the lights. No plans to paint or weather it at this time. Just want to get it together, light it up, and enjoy.

Looking forward to it

I loved the show as a kid, but the new 2199 remake really does an amazing job of updating to a more modern look and animation style while being faithful to the original story. Hard to believe it came out in the 70s before Star Wars

Always loved the WWII in space aesthetic of the show

I have not seen it yet but looks like they now have a 3199 version. Wonder how much different if at all it is from the 2199 version

One of the best episodes being the "Rainbow Star Cluster" battle which sure seems like a version of the WWII Battle of Midway

much the same way the Star Wars trench run sequence on the Death Star heavily pulls from the Damn busters of the RAF in WWII

and a nice compilation of some action scenes

Star Blazers. It was great stuff. Short story is the Gamilons, aliens, polluted the earth. The people of earth turned the sunken battleship Yamato into a starship to go on a mission to save the planet. The hole in the bow of the ship is the wave motion gun.

Definitely will watch those later.

Ok...I'm a bit intimidated to try and put the decals down with just water and no setting or softener solution, especially where there are recessed grooves. Maybe I should just do the stickers?

Finally the light kit came in...and no batteries! Tomorrow I'll head "in to town" and see if the store has any. They're like little watch batteries, LR44.

I have the hull together, the top deck is just loosely attached, I have to glue a bunch of guns to it.

I ordered another light kit for a future model from Hobby Link Japan. I did not realize how they do business and it will be expensive to ship it. And turns out I don't need it for the next Star Blazers ship.

Yamato Rebel 3199 is not a remake of 2199, but a continuation of the remake story. We're up to Be Forever Yamato now, the movie from the 1980. Here is where the story involves Sasha, the daughter of Mamoru Kodai (Susumu Kodai's older brother) and Starsha. I've seen the original movie and I have mixed feelings about it because Sasha is such a cool character and... I guess I won't spoil it. 3199 came out in the theaters in October, but I wasn't able to see it. I really do not know if the events of the movie transpire 100 years in the future from 2199 and if it entails any time travel. I really do not know unless I spoil it.

I loved 2199 and they augmented the original series about Starsha so wonderfully. but have mixed feelings about 2202 (the second series concerning Teresa and the White Comet Empire). I'd rented it when it first came out, but IMHO they made it too convoluted. My wife said that it just doesn't feel like Yamato. I bought the bluray box set thinking that I'd enjoy it more and understand it better with English subtitles, but I was still thinking, "Wait, what's going on again?" It's really a mess.

I have not seen much at all of 2205, other than a few clips. I never got around to renting it. In fact, I gave up watching my 2202 blurays. It really bordered on jumping the shark. I guess 2205 is the remake of Bolar Wars, the third season of the original show (which I also never saw). 3199 is a remake of Be Forever Yamato. I really can't remember much about it, but I think that's the one that sort of borrows heavily from War of the Worlds when Earth is attacked by alien tripod mecha. (Good luck finding THOSE model kits!) All I remember is that Sasha is so cool and what happens to her is just... ah. I'll shut up now. Plastic models are cool though.

I appreciate the background information!

Honestly I am just a fan of the ships at this point. I have a different ship waiting in the stash once this one is finished.

I just started watching Yamato 2205, which is the remake of the Bolar Wars 3rd season of Yamato/Starblazers. Starts out with a Gamilus sneak attack on the Bolars, resulting in an epic space fleet battle. Pretty cool so far. I rented it last week and have to return the DVD tomorrow, so I should watch it all before then.
