Well, I discovered something. Hasegawa evidently has two sets of 1/72 F4s. An older tool (60s or 70s) that isnt really all that. And a newer much nicer tooling from the 90s. Well, I was unaware of that. I purchased this kit at our local IPMS meeting for our annual build the same kit contest. The club supplies the kits in 72, 48 and 32. Build them (or any other kit of the same subject) and bring them in to the Dec meeting. If you bring in the kit you bought from the club, they reimburse you. Very nice.

Sooooo, I have determined I WILL build this kit and make it look nice. Seams and gaps or not. BUT, it seems I will be doing so without it having control panels or sticks. Yep, as you can see in the pic of the directions, Hasegawa felt these thing to be superfluous. And here is where I discovered something else. The really nice PE set from Eduard for the 1/72 Hasegawa F-4E is for the newer tool kit. Which makes sense IF YOU KNOW there are different tooled kits still being boxed AT THE SAME TIME. The PE does not fit the kit I have. I did manage to cut it up and use it for the side panels. Not the main control panels though. Not enough space.

And, since I am indeed a numb nut, I managed to delete the pics I took of the ejection seats and cockpit I took before I put the canopy on. *sigh* Trust me, it looks good! ;D

So here are the pics of it built up so far showing the ill fit.

So its a challenge. I think this will make me appreciate the Academy kit when I get to doing the Good Evening Da Nang boxing.

Got the seams pretty much taken care of. There is a bit more to do on the intakes, but not a lot. Underside painted light gray with a quick coat of white over that. Masked up and some bare metal silver shot on the leading edges for chipping. Going to try dabbing masking solution with a brush for the first time.

I also decided to go ahead and diorama it a bit with the Hasegawa weapons loading kit. Tractor is mostly done. Got to weather it then I will put the wheels on for real.

Thanks guys. :D

Got some more work done after posting those pics.

Got the loading equipment mostly completed. Need to start on the figures and the actual weapons on that side of things.

I was going to spray lightened colors to fade the paint, but after sanding with fine grit sticks, I think it looks faded enough. So just touch up and neatening on the camo. Then I have to manage to scribe the vertical lines on the tail behind the exhaust because Hasegawa figured THOSE were unnecessary like any kinf of cockpit detail was.

And I am not sure if I over did the chipping. What say you all?

Re: 1/72 Hasegawa F-4E OLD TOOL

So, I came to the conclusion, based on feedback I got, I did indeed over do the chipping and the dirt on the loading equipment. So I fixed that.

So after fixing that, got all the decals on. Dirtied her up. Its hard to tell on the top side due to the camo, but its obvious on the white underside. Only two missiles from the kit attached. I am doing a load out with a pave spike pod and the gun pod. And GBU 10s and SUU 30 bombs. The GBUs will be on, the SUUs will be on the weapons dolly.

So, i still have to do the weapons and then the figures and that will about wrap it up. Hopefully be done in a week or so. I set up the diorama to see if it would look as good as I thought. I rather like.

OK, so it is all wrapped up. Figures done, weapons done. All that jazz. I really like how it turned out.
