Really been thinking about this build and I've narrowed down some choices:

1) This will be a heavily weathered bird (per this year's theme)
2) The weathering will be winterized
3) I'll be doing a full meal deal build, starting from Eduard's Limited kit
4) It'll be Blue 52 with some weathering borrowed from Blues 41 and 51.
5) I might build with a snowy base but only enter the model to keep it in the air category (unless the snowy base is permitted, no people or equipment.
6) I have to double check that I have decals to do 52, so I'll need the numbers, a polar bear, and whatever else is bird specific...I might have to part out some sets. So if anyone has extras let me know!
I have plenty of reference material already gathered I think...but I can always add more!

Hmmm...just thinking, if I can't find decals, I could just make my own...especially since they're all so faded I don't have to worry about opacity...

Re: AIR 1/48 Su-27UB Blue 52 Polar Flanker

Sweet! I love the Flanker.

You know, there's a company that makes silicon molds for those octagonal stones. Just pour in some plaster and you can make one hell of a dio base...complete with chipped away cobblestones.

Check this out

Doesn't hurt he's a sponsor of the contest too.

Re: AIR 1/48 Su-27UB Blue 52 Polar Flanker

Those octagons are in the "warm weather" setting...I want to add some SNOW :p I'm in Chicago and therefore a glutton for punishment in white powder form apparently. If I do a base, it'll be the rectangular shapes and ICM has some airfield panels...or I could scratch it up. But those Ushci pieces look awesome...

UPDATE:: Turns out Linden Hills Decals makes almost the EXACT SET I NEED BUT IT'S OUT OF PRODUCTION!!!!!
If ANYONE has set 48007 or even SCRAPS from it LET ME KNOW!!!!!!!

Re: AIR 1/48 Su-27UB Blue 52 Polar Flanker

First let me say this is an excellent project already and we havent seen plastic.

Im very tempted to buy this kit simply because i love that color palet so much. Id totally try that hex base, but thats just me.

And i wouldnt add a figure or equipment so i could enter it in air. 😉

Just back from ebay...Gulp, thats an expensive kit...whoa. Looks killer.

Re: AIR 1/48 Su-27UB Blue 52 Polar Flanker

Excellent. Really looking forward to this one.

Re: AIR 1/48 Su-27UB Blue 52 Polar Flanker

Oh boy, looking forward to your progress!

Is the Eduard kit a repop of the Academy kit? Scott, if thats the case, that could be a cheaper route, get the kit and PE separately... but I don't know what else is in that Eduard kit combo...

Re: AIR 1/48 Su-27UB Blue 52 Polar Flanker

Wow! Thanks for all the words of encouragement folks! I think I'll just keep the base simple with just some snow on it, no figures whatsoever. Although I don't think I'll make the snow a permanent fixture on the airframe itself. I've already started thinking of ways to make a removable snow patch :p Or I could just sprinkle some on for the final pics.

Yes the Eduard edition used Academy sprues but has a ton of extras. I picked it up for $75 when is was on sale at Squadron...the ONLY time I've seen it priced that low...

resin seats and pits, ALL the PE you could need and tons of decals. unfortunately, as mentioned, not the decals i need.

Further update on decals: Linden Hills set is completely sold out and they won't do a custom sheet. I figured out all the ones I actually need. I also went through my stash and realized I had a couple of Begemot sets that I can pull some stuff from, like the polar bear and maybe that text that's on the left intake, at least from this sheet:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/271791904256?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

I could probably borrow the '25' from this sheet and re-arrange, but the shape of them just isn't quite right.

I think I really might have to go the custom order route to get exactly what I need. That means spending some time in Illustrator and Photoshop...However, there's a bud over @ ARC Forums who might have a handful of scraps from that Linden Hill sheet for me!! It'd be awesome but Bort 52 isn't on the sheet....so once again I'm settling more into making my own numbers...

Re: AIR 1/48 Su-27UB Blue 52 Polar Flanker

New update! I got a response from a French model shop and they have the decals in stock!

Re: AIR 1/48 Su-27UB Blue 52 Polar Flanker

Just saw that on facetoob. Awesome.

Re: AIR 1/48 Su-27UB Blue 52 Polar Flanker

Glad to hear that you found the decals. ;)

Re: AIR 1/48 Su-27UB Blue 52 Polar Flanker

Ha well I haven't heard back from them about ordering yet! They just said they have them in stock :p

I'm not quite ready to bust out the plastic yet...I'd like to clear a couple things off the bench first. But even with all the decals sourced, I think I still need to have the correct Bort numbers custom printed so I'll design those tomorrow probably and send them off...

Re: AIR 1/48 Su-27UB Blue 52 Polar Flanker

Going to be an excellent build, however you figure out your decal issue

Re: AIR 1/48 Su-27UB Blue 52 Polar Flanker

Thanks Q!

Turns out I don't need to order the decals from FRANCE because a modeler over @ ARC has the pieces I need from the sheet! So we've worked out a trade! I still need to do the art for the 52.

Re: AIR 1/48 Su-27UB Blue 52 Polar Flanker

HA whipped up some free-hand fonts. What do you think? It's hard to match the color so I'm trying a few options...
