1/24 GMC Pickup w/ snow plow

Update time, and now with pics! :) :D

Firstly, this is apparently a very old kit, parts of it older than I am ('78).

Lots of ejector pin marks on this, so got me some Mr. Surfacer to try out. So far a decent and easy to work with filler.

I ended up breaking the shifter stick off while trying to scrape mold lines off, oops!

The plow has some nice details

8555165041_c9661ee8ca_b.jpg

I bought a PE set of wipers, not sure if I like them and we'll see how they look. They're rather thin, I'm thinking I might need to double up on them to get a realistic look

8556274166_6abcdaa984_b.jpg

Also bought a distributor kit for the engine

8555155299_bd2da8967e_b.jpg

The tires for this are kinda crappy, with nasty mold lines, used my dremel to grind them down a bit

8556273304_1e1bf0435f_b.jpg

Put a gloss coat on the wheels before the alclad

8556272704_e7c0c58a2d_b.jpg

I think they turned out nice, glad I finally got the nasty factory chrome stripped off

8556272000_75503bcf5e_b.jpg

The grille and bumpers also turned out nice

8556271304_5b60d63dbd_b.jpg

Here's the engine with the distributor kit, not sure what that other cylindrical piece is for...I'm not a car guy and know nothing about truck engines

8555161035_98fafdb309_b.jpg

Tires and wheels assembled, I'm going to make the rims look nasty and dirty

8556270112_f31b502340_b.jpg

Distributor installed, I think the wire sticking up would go to the alternator? Again, not a car guy. :p And there is no alternator in this kit either...

Last night I put a coating of AK wash on, and discovered the AK wash dissolves the Alclad lacquer!

Plus any clear coat, like Testors dullcote also dissolves the lacquer paints. I'm still learning the ins and outs of the alclad. What should I use to protect the lacquer from enamel washes?

Hi Cave Dweller.
That extra cylinder is the coil. the centre wire from the distributor goes to the top of the coil.

Jim

Yeah the kit is an older one that they just re-issued with the plow in it.

The copywrite is kinda funny though, as the "China" would have had to of been added to the molds, because Revell was still manufacturing the kits in the US in 1977, wasn't until the early 2000s that they moved manufacturing to China, so I find it interesting that they actually modified the molds to add "China" to it, but not change the date.

I am loving the rims. The black undercoat is the key. Is the engine all Alclad as well?

Ok thanks, where does the coil go? ???

It usually is located near the distributor with a short lead.
What you should do is research the motor on the internet and find it's placement.
Research of your build is a necessary part of scale model building. Kits are not complete or accurate. It is up to the modeler to fill in the gaps.

Yeah I did google it a few times. I think this particular engine is called a 350cid, but it's hard to find pictures of what they looked like in the 80s...mostly been rebuilt by now.

This is looking good ,love the wheels :) you can place the coil on the firewall ,or on the back of the engine somewhere near the distributor ,or on one of the inner guards ...up to you .

Chris.

OK - I am totally swiping that dremel the tires idea. Smart.

Looking really kewl.

Thanks for the mechanical tips. I might also want to make a battery and add a lot more wires and hoses to the engine compartment once I get the body painted up.

Also am going to really need to add some details to the interior, which is very plain. So far I've made floormatts, a CB mic + cable, and working on seatbelts. Would also like to do cupholders and pile various junk and stuff on the dashboard!

Nice day today, very productive. Did a bunch of work on the interior, which was very basic straight out of the box.

First I made some floormats, cut from junk mail. There is a use for it after all!

8563007069_2e744ec8ce_b.jpg

Also made some seatbelts from the same junk mail

8564110590_2c2844f9d6_b.jpg

Applied some heavy washes to it, mainly Citadel washes

8563004885_dd9c6d4cb6_b.jpg

And gave things a bit of a drybrush to make it look more worn out.

8563000409_3aeeda0765_b.jpg

Dashboard turned out decent I think, and I made the CB radio handset from bits of plastic and a very fine spring.

8564111814_94567fe97b_b.jpg

Next I washed the undercarriage with some AK dust effects, really great stuff they make. I want to order more but it might freeze in the mail...

8564108424_90effef433_b.jpg

Turned out real nice, but I think I'll order some more AK stuff to get that filthy winter look. Need that carbonized sludge look ;D

Been having some issues with paint, however. Think I applied too much hairspray and it partially dissolved the salt, making zones that the paint doesn't like to dry properly in. I've put on 3 coats now!

I'm going to paint the top white and do some white side paneling

This is pretty much my plan for painting. What a disgusting color, I love it! :D

Thanks, spent the weekend scraping off salt and masking the model up in preparation for the white paint. I'm not sure I'm going to go all the way, as the reference pic shows a multi-layered border around the white paint, with chrome and black stripes. They would be hard to get right since I'm doing this all with masking tape.

At any rate it is a charming, if gross paint scheme, straight out of the 70s. I kinda like that, and the design of this truck has grown on me. It has it's charm, in a Fall Guy kind of way. I remember watching that show as a kid and this is the truck he drove, although with a big of a lift.

Getting the masking tape on right and secured is going to be a bit of a job. Gotta make sure the cab matches up perfectly with the bed.

So far the paint is chipping spendidly, and the extra thick layer has actually served to make additional scratches and chipping fairly easy. Cut through the primer in a few places, but some AK pigments should cover that up nicely during the final weathering process.

All in all, I really am enjoying this kit, it's so different than my usual sci fi leanings.

This is looking really cool bro... Love the CB radio! :)

Thanks, even though no one will ever see it when the model is done. ;D

Been masking the model last few days and painted the white paneling last night and today. Took longer to mask it than to paint it, but the results were well worth it. The black line inside the white paneling is going to be very hard to do, might not even attempt it.

Also, I've found that while an xacto knife is good for scraping the salt off, a duller sculpting tool is ace for chipping the paint! The paint is chipping off this beautifully. I'll try to post some pics later today.

By Sunday I'm hoping to install the windows and glue the body on.

Also ordered some streaking grime from AK, but sadly they were sold out on winter streaking grime, go figure since its winter! :'(

Well here is an update for ya Grendels! :D

Did a lot of chipping work this weekend and also decided to assemble the body. Glued in the windows too.

Now its time for some heavy washing, but I might wait for my streaking grime to arrive in the mail.

Masked up for painting

Here it is together, really starting to take shape!

8587135163_b7e4b8f012_b.jpg

Engine details, needs some touch ups since the enamel wash partially dissolved the alclad lacquer

Roll cage with lights, this I'm wanting to rust up, but I need to find a clear coat that wont dissolve the lacquer. Testors and any other spray on coat all dissolve it. I bought some alclad flat kote to give a try.

8587133135_8c685a2955_b.jpg

That's it for now!
