I use instructions more for suggestions than following them as a rule. Its a hobby, feel free to do whatever makes you happy to the model.

Get a cat or two, or a Labrador puppy and give him a tennis ball. Better yet, take care of a three year old and let him have access to models. Those seemed to have solved my problem.

Ya, they are fiddly. I finally picked up a PE bending tool. It and a razor blade work well with flattening out PE railings. I also use multiple types of tweezers and found that using white Elmers glue works the best for attaching the PE during the initial installation then going back later...
