If it walks like a duck... oh wait a minute, different animal all together. Seriously though, I think your plan of attack is on point. Short of using the model for slot car racing, wheels glued in position should not be an issue at all. Your model, your choice. ;)

Pearl Harbor Trio - Hasegawa boxed-set (Zero, Val, Kate)

You can throw them in a half used bottle of Tamiya extra thin cement to make some liquid styrene to use as a filler/putty. ;)

I've done this once before with a small part similar to this. You can use the good part you have and lie it flat like you have it and press milliput or molding clay over it to make a mold. Use quick UV cure resin and cast an identical part. If it is a good match to the original, now take to...

@Tommergun Man that thing is looking great! Especially for an old kit like that, excellent work.

Just a small update here. I painted up the engine parts and assembled, but touch ups will be done after mounting. The firewall has been painted, lower arms added and just have to wait for glue to cure for some detail painting. Floor framing and under tray ready for some white (airbrushing soon...

The Micro set and a little heat from an iridescent light bulb will make life easier to get all the decals to lay flat. I noticed on old decals like that, the Micro Sol can actually eat them up and cause crazing. HTH

You're welcome, can't wait to see your Hornet build.

Chris, I don't believe Ponto Models make a set for the 1/200 USS Hornet CV8, but they do make one for Trumpeter or I Love Kit 1/200 USS Enterprise CV-8, which could be used easily since they were both Yorktown class CVs. I think the only difference for the most part was Hornet had Mark 37...

So here is where I am at with this build. I have pulled all the parts for the engine, but to my disappointment, the kit is molded in frets of color. Except for the pan (molded in black), the engine is molded in a metallic-ish silver. This normally wouldn't be a problem, but the pigments used...

Returning to Modeling After 50+ Years - Need Advice...

A solid plan of action. ;) In the meantime, take your time and research airbrushing. When you're ready to pull the trigger, you'll be well informed and ready to enjoy the experience.

Returning to Modeling After 50+ Years - Need Advice...

There has been a lot of great information shared here. I can only add that you may want to consider a single action airbrush to start. Dual action require a bit more finesse vs a single action, and has a stepper learning curve, being that you are controlling the amount of air and paint flow...

@Tommergun Man that looks sweet! White and red are always a nice color combo. Great job.

The major work will be done on the body, matching the custom color as best I can with the limited resources concerning the actual color, and of course all the livery that goes into it. I fitted the hood in place, and since this will be static, I've glued it in place and corrected all the gaps...
