In regards to the squadron putty, Bondo and most laquer based putty, you can use fingernail polish remover to smooth and work it. (*Editor note: Choose the type with acetone)

Using something like a Q-tip you can mold it around areas/shapes and even clean up excess putty.

I don't know if it works after its been completely hardened but its works just fine with only a few minutes of drying.
