You know, this really is a whole different thing than modelling as we know it.
I work in a camera shop part time and the growth in the number of self labelled "serious" amatuer photographers since the introduction of the DSLR is astounding. For most things I use my DroidX anymore but if I'm really serious or just want to go have some fun I grab one of my old medium format film cameras. There is still nothing quite as moving as a well done film print. Especially in black and white.
To me modelling is an art form, not unlike photography, and to me drawing something up in CAD is not art. Sorry but that's my opinion. Now, I do think this technology can be extremely helpful to the aftermarket manufacturers. Maybe we will see resin detail parts replaced with printed ones. Just think how easy it would be for the manufacturer to make needed changes if there were fit, or other issues. Now all we need is a mini CNC to make metal barells and landing gear and were golden.

As an avid photographer(maybe not so avid anymore) this looks to me like the transition from film to digital. Analog vs. Digital, it's the same but different. Different equipment, different technique, different results. Yes the finished product looks the same initially but there really is no comparison.
