Kit Review:

Hobby Link Japan Build Series - Maschinen Krieger (Ma.K.) Ketzer

1/20 Panzer Kampf Anzug Ausf K-4 KETZER

         By Ken Abrams

Kit Produced by Wave (TAM78020)
Originally released September 2011
Price about: $29.15 USD /22.95 EUR
- Hobby Link Japan - 1/20 P.K.A. Ausf. K-4 Ketzer

Inside the box:

9 – Tan sprues
2 – Clear sprues
1 – Soft flexible gray sprue
1 – Decal sheet with markings for several different styles
1 – 8 page set of instructions for assembly

Sprues:

There are twelve sprues in the box, many of them from a previous released suit 'Gustav' and a few specifically for this variant. All the molding appears very sharp with great detail and only the slightest amount of flash in some of the more delicate areas of the mold. Mold seams are very minimal and should clean up easily. There are at first glance absolutely no ejector pin marks on exposed surfaces of the model and I have found no sink marks anywhere on the parts.

Instructions:

The instructions have a color cover and back page with artwork on the front and photos of the actual built kit on the back. Inside are typical line drawings with parts number call out and straight forward linear assembly. Choices/options of parts are called out for during the build and the builder should decide which position and pose before moving past that area of assembly. English text is very minimal but the pictures themselves are clear and easy to follow.

Conclusion:

This is a very nice kit with sharp details and very well molded parts. Assembly for the most part seems to be of a 'snap fit' style and minimal glue is needed. If the kit assembles as cleanly as it is molded, it sould be a stunner. Recommended.

Great vid and review brotha. Looking forward to seeing what you do with this one.

Nice video. Great kit review, good eye catching that blemish on the clear piece. Will be building along with you on this one. I have built two of these newer style Wave Ma.K kits before and they really do build up nice. Cant wait to see more!

Great to see so much interest in this kit and I have to agree that the price is great. I will be building this strictly out of the box, I wont be using anything that didn't come with it aside from paint and weathering. It is basically a snap together kit and is fully pose-able.

The instructions start with the main body, assembling the many small fittings into each halve and then attaching the two halves together. The parts snap together but I used glue to attach parts to one side before assembling both halves to keep this steady and lined up.

There are three clear parts called out in these first steps and if you use them at this stage, you will have to do some painting in the cockpit at the shoulders as this becomes impossible to paint after the clear is installed. I personally prefer painting once assembled and fitting clear parts last but I need to check if the parts can be used this way. With the side 'glass' sandwiched between the body and shoulder, I have to dry fit and check, while a slightly tricky fit I found it is possible.

Same goes for what I can only imagine is some sort of dashboard type display, inserted in front of the pilot.

The shoulder protection armor is called out in these early steps as well, but needs to remain movable, and is inserted with the side glass. I check to see if it is possible at a later stage while the assembly is dry fit and find it can easily be inserted from the outside at a later point in time.

With all my checking and re-checking done I can glue up the main torso and move on to other steps. The pilot is a fairly quick assembly and goes together great. The helmet and head can remain dry fit on their pins to make detail painting easier.

He can also be put into and taken out of the cockpit easily and can remain separate for now.

The legs and feet are fairly straight forward and quickly take shape. Again these parts are of a 'snap fit' type but I use glue just to be sure.

The arms are exactly the same with multi-part assemblies using the soft sprue parts for elbow and shoulder joints. The gun has a small clear part called out now, which I will fit later.

The right arm calls out for three holes to be drilled to accept the pins for the shield. The writing is not in English so you have to pay attention as once the two halves are glued, locating the position of the holes would be difficult. This too fits snugly and can be left off if wanted to make painting behind it easier.

Lastly the weapon, which goes together very easily with minimal seam clean up.

My next update will concentrate the final assembly of the remaining parts and then cleaning up all of the seams, adding some weld beads and maybe using a few of those extra nuts/bolts on the sprue. Thanks for checking it out, so far a very nice kit with minimal effort.
