SBD-1 Dauntless ...Hasegawa 1/48 limited Edition.
« on: Wed Jan, 11, 2012, 09:28:AM »
Hi all ,

Welcome to this out of the box build review of Hasegawa's 1/48 scale SBD-1 Dauntless (Limited Edition) . In this review I will take a look at everything,  from whats in the box right up to the final finishing .Each stage will be added as both Video & pictoral updates.

This kit can be purchased directly from here ......

http://www.hlj.com/product/HSG09953

But first a little history of the SBD-1 .

The Douglas SBD Dauntless was derived from the Northrop XBT2 , When Jack Northrop left the company and Douglas Aircraft took over production the XBT2 was renamed SBD-1 and first flew at El Segundo, in California ,on May 1st 1940
144  of these aircraft were ordered for the U.S. Navy ,however only 57 were delivered ,But they were considered 'not yet combat ready' ,and were given to the U.S. Marine corp for Scouting /Bombing duties ( VMSB)
The other 87 aircraft of the original production were upgraded ,mostly the fuel capacity for longer range and carrier use ,these were Delivered as SBD-2's to the Navy.

The Kit .......

This kit is actually a Limited Edition re-release from Hasegawa .The original release suffered a lot of bad press ,this was due to the flaps/Divebrakes being molded into the wings ,the very disinctive holes in the Divebrakes were represented as small indents in the plastic and generally just looked wrong .
However Hasegawa have done a first class job in correcting that problem by way of adding a new Etch fret of parts to replace the Flaps & Divebrakes they have also included a new Resin Airscoop for the engine cowling .

Box contents .......

10 x Grey plastic sprues containing the main parts.
5 x small grey plastic sprues containing individual small parts.
1x clear plastic sprue
4x Black poly caps
1x Resin part ( scoop )
1x Etch Fret ( Flaps/Divebrakes )
1x Decal sheet ( 5 Aircraft )
1x instruction booklet .

Below I have included photos of the box contents ,these can also be seen in the Video review ........

I would like to thank Hobby Link Japan ( www.hlj.com ) for supplying this kit for review .

Again ,if you would like to purchase this kit you can get it directly from here ....

Thanks for looking.

Chris.

Thanks for the "first look", Chris!

I agree with Spud, the PE for the dive brakes are going to test the most experienced photo-etch masters among us.  It's a nice kit, though, don't see to many ejector pin or sink marks (a couple of ejectors on the IP, but nothing serious).

The IP looks very crisp and nicely detailed, too.

Are those long rectangular pieces on the sprues with the fuselage halves, the interior sidewall details?

Thanks Baron , It is a nice little kit ,not too many epm's but there are a few in awkward places ,nothing to worry about tho' .

Yes those rectangular parts are the sidewalls for the cockpit ,more of that in the next update ;)

Keep up the good work. I think that PE stuff is going to make this plane look pretty sharp.

Looks like a cool build mate, are those panel lines raised or recessed? If raised will you be rescribing them at all?
