Hi all ,

So now we've had a look at whats in the box its time to get started on the build .

Pt2. Hobby Link Japan Build Series - SBD-1 Dauntless

Construction starts the same as very other aircraft ...the cockpit ,which in this kit is assembled into a complete tub ...ie the sidewalls are not molded onto the fuselage but instead they are a seperate part that fixes onto the floor & Bulkheads .For ease of painting I have assembled the cockpit in sub assemblies as you can see in the pics below . A few parts were also left on the sprue .
Everything so far has went together well with no problems ,one thing to note however is the epm's on the sidewalls .It is impossible to sand these out so I just put a dab of poly cement in them which should level them out enough so as not to be noticable under paint .Its not a big issue anyway as when the cockpit is assembled they probably wont be seen.

The second step in the instructions is the engine ,so as Im going to be putting Black through the Airbrush I thought I would get this built too so I can get the basecoat on .
The engine is well represented in the kit and builds up quickly and looks good ,although not much of it will be seen once the cowling goes over it.

So ,next it was off to the spraybooth to shoot some Black .
I like to put Black on first for two reasons ,Firstly it helps create a shadow effect (adds depth) secondly I make sure all the little corners and awkward areas are covered with a dark colour just in case I miss with the colour coat.

The engine also got its base coat on and once dry I will pick out the different colours and add a few washes to bring it to life.

But for now I will continue with the cockpit .
Now its time for the colour to go on . For this aircraft the interior can be anything from Zinc Chromate to Khaki Green so I chose to go sort of middle of the road and went for Interior Green .
I sprayed the Green all over but avoided going into the shadowed areas and corners too much ,this is were I start to add a bit of depth just by letting the Black show though a bit in places .
Once I finished the Green I added a drop of white to the paint and sprayed that mixture onto the parts from the top down only ,just to add a bit of a highlight or fade.

After that all these parts were sealed with a clear coat and when dry I can move on with the decals ,details & weathering.

Continued......

Moving on to the Detailing & weathering .I will point out that there is no belts on the pilots seat ,the reason I havent added them is simply because this is an Out of the Box review so my aim is to show you what can be built with what you get in the kit .If you wish to add the belts there are plenty of AM sets available

The first thing I did after putting the clear on ,was to add a dark wash .For this I used AK Interactive's Winter streaking grime ,its a great Dark grey/brown colour and when thinned with AK's thinners it makes a good wash .
I let the wash dry ,then turned my attention to the cockpit decals .The decals are very thin and worked well ,All the instruments are molded onto the plastic parts ,but the decals fit the areas perfectly and settled nicely in to place with a little bit of Micro Sol

I then picked out some details on the sidewalls of the cockpit ,things like control levers ,knobs , leather pouch etc. These were all painted in with Vallejo Model Colour Acrylics which I tend to favour for these smaller jobs ,they give great coverage and dont go pasty like some other acrylics

That left only one thing to do ....assemble the cockpit .This was pretty straight forward ,everything went together with no issues and all in all gives a fair representation of the Dauntless cockpit ,although as always most of these details wont be seen once the fuselage is joined up

In the next stage we'll look at assembling the main Airframe.

Thanks for looking.

Chris.

Thanks guys .

Spud ,it depends really on what you are going to use them for . I have sprayed enamels ,dried them in the heat for a few hours ,then Klear coat for weathering .Those cockpit parts were done Black and about an hour later I sprayed the Green on ,so not really any different from Acrylics .However if you plan to mask up over them I would suggest leaving over night .I usually have plenty of heat going when Im painting to speed things up a bit ,but any masking needed and its left until the following day  ;) .

Yup...you're right Chris...I am pretty sure the Marines possessed them and at that point weren't on carriers.  I built mine a while back in the pre-war yellow wings NMF version...was loads of fun!!

Beautiful work there Chris!  The interior detail on that Hase kit blows the old Revellogram away.  There is virtually no detail in the pit save for a bit of shabby raised buttons on the side consols.  There is no I.P. proper, just a decal with no decent, flat area to place it.  Quite impressed with this kit so far and you certainly have brought the best out of the interior.  Lookin' good Buddy!!
