Revell U-wing, Pocket X-wing
« on: Fri Mar, 03, 2017, 09:45:PM »
So by happenstance, both of these kits are in scale with each other ( at least based on the pilots )

the U-wing might be 1/110 while the X-wing is 1/112. Either way, close enough to not notice at that size

I will be painting the Revell X-wing as one of Blue Squadron (maybe Blue Leader?)

Ultimately I am hoping to put them together in a dio of them flying over the scarif beach, possibly adding in the Revell AT-ACT (which is also supposedly around 1/110)

I don't think I am going to bother with many major mods trying to accurize them or adding and interior to the U-wing with open doors etc...

looking more for a quicker build

No pics yet, but this should help get the ball rolling

Cool plan- I'd love to see a flight dio with both X and U Wings together!

So finally off to a start

First stumbling block

I did not notice before priming that 3 of the 5 stripes are actually etched in as panel lines ::)
Why only 3 of the 5, no idea. It's Revell

This makes doing blue leader a problem.

So I tried hastily filling them in after sanding away some of the primer

I think I might just bite the bullet and paint it up as Blue 3 instead. No ref pics I can find on it, only Blue Leader, so I will mostly just make it up

For painting the X-wing, I wanted to try what some studio scale modelers suggest. Paint a black base and white over-spray that doesn't quite cover everywhere
I got a little heavy handed in parts, but overall, not too bad

As as relative sizes. You can see the pilots are nearly the same, so am going with the assumption the ships are nearly the same. The AT-ACT is supposedly close to 1/110. Might be a little on the smaller side, but close enough to stand in the background

I really didn't want to do many mods. but there are a couple things that might hinder me or bug me

Second stumbling block. The heat sinks on the guns. They are horrible. They are just painted lines. Not looking forward to scratching them, but I really think I should. Then again. I want a quick easy build. I have to keep reminding myself this is more of a "trial run" for some painting techniques and colors I want to try. I can always do a "take 2" with Bandai's far superior 1/144 versions later.

Screw You Revell >:(

Third stumbling black is the U-wing interior. To make room for the crappy sound effect module, it takes up the whole interior, and worse, it is one big part.

I had planned on having it with the doors open, and adding a gunner, but that part leaves no room

without the part you can see all the way through to the other door like you are supposed to be able to do

So now do I start chopping up that part, or just do a doors closed one
again Screw you Revell >:(

After a couple of hours This is where I am at

I had no more masking tape, so I tried hand brushing all the markings as best I could

Looks fine from normal viewing distance, but with these extreme closes-ups, I am tempted to strip it all and start over.

Thanks!

Not much new, but at least I got the guns done. I masked off the pre-paint stuff since on the heat sinks it would be hard to paint those tiny evenly spaced lines like they had and it would just take to much effort for this kit to scratch new parts

I think I need to clean up the blue stripe on the side of the fuselage

Little plane's looking pretty good there.
Nice work with it
