Space Battleship Yamato stuff
« on: Tue Dec, 06, 2016, 02:01:PM »
I rescued this old original series Bandai 1/1000 version from my brother's heap of built models he was getting rid of to make room. He built it as a kid to use as a toy rather than a model, so it got beat up a bit, and is a glue bombs and a mess with seams in many areas. Also one of the wings was missing, so I left the other off for now (hence the huge gap in the middle where it would be) until I can find the other one, or scratch build it

At any rate, I did nothing more than primer it and give it a proper paint job instead of the bare molded in color plastic

I did go for a less "cartoony" paint job/colors

In addition to "play damaged" built kits like the Andromeda, he also had a handful of unbiuilt kits like the Earth Defense force cruisers etc..

First thing that caught my eye was a 2520 Yamato.  I had never heard anything about that series. I built that straight out of the box again going for a less saturated color "cartoony" look

Not too sure about the design. Looks good from some angles, but not so good from others. Also the deck guns are a little odd looking

  Great job on both   ;D

I agree with you on the design  ,
I like her profile but she seems too thick in the beam
.... I can really dig the bow though   8)

Very nicely done.
I built the first one for the contest a couple of years back. Your version looks much better

Thanks!

I've also recently finished the Fine Molds 1/500 "Missle Escort ship" aka, Kodai's ship the Yukikaze from the Battle of Pluto.

From what I understand Fine Molds got the license for Leiji Matsumoto's designs, but could not use the Space Battleship Yamato brand, so they produced this and Captain Okita's ship, just making them generic "spaceships".

Unfortunately that means the decals are not useful. I wonder if anybody has produced a Cosmo Navy style decal set for these

at any rate

So looking through some more of the unbuilt kits, I found 3 of the Earth Defense force ships

None of these ships were in that series as apparently they were part of the second and third series with the Comet Empire.

The first thing I noticed when assembling thme  is that Bandai has really improved. These kits are a far cry from the current quality of the Bandai Star Wars and Yamato line.

The gaps and misaligned parts I guess are typical of kits from this time (at least when comparing to AMT/MPC/ERTL Star Wars stuff).

Next, the scales were not listed on 2 of them, and I am guessing they are just box scale like much of the mecha collection. The one that does list a scale says 1/270, but I am not sure on that. Seems like it would be too small for 1/270. Unless they are talking about the mini-kit that is with it. I've seen some places list one of the kits as 1/700, but the two ships look like they are nearly the same body class, just with a little different weaponry, one being more of a patrol ship, the other being more of a cruiser.

So I started with the little mini-kits in each of the boxes

First to finish is the Medical (Shuttle?)

  Is that the box-art  ?
               Pretty sweet  !    ;D

I've always used PhotoBucket  , but last year   -- it's been a while  --  all of a sudden the old route to post pics stop working so I switched to capturing the " direct " address   ...  even though it appeared to be identical    :P

I ain't no IT person , so I have no idea why
I've never used IMGUR   ,   check if you can go a different route    ???

That's a screen cap

I am able to post those links elsewhere

In some cases I can't even make a post when it is just text. I tried short posts with just a few lines and ones with just one pic. Above were the only ones I could get through. Never had the problem before

I am getting HTTP error 500

Wow! These all look great, but the 2520 Yamato is the best build I've ever seen of that kit- and the kit looks great when properly built.

I agree the deck guns are pretty weird- swapping on guns and anti-aircraft guns from the original version would do wonders on this design...you could even swap the red for royal blue and call it an entirely different ship.

As you can tell, I'm inspired by your build- and that's the highest praise I can give.
Great job!

Thanks!

Still having problems posting pics directly. not sure if it's something specific to this thread or what

So i'll just leave the links

I am guessing the medical ship is the precursor to the really cool Seagull in the 2199 series.

My first impression was it as kind of a dated design, and the drawing/model pic on the box didn't help

But after literally doing a same day build and paint, it kind of grew on me.

I now wish I had spent more time and maybe scratch up some new engines for the top and paid more attention to adding some other little details here and there.

One thing I did do was scribe in some additional panels/hatches etc and did some seam filling on the worse areas.

I am tempted to strip it all and go to town detailing it more.

here you can see an great example of how the misaligned the parts were looking at what is supposed to be a circle on the front

Great job on that medical shuttle- I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with the Marine's landing craft!
What colors are you planning on painting it?

I was thinking of a greyish blue more so than blue. I was actually considering the TS-32 Haze grey and AS-6 Luftwaffe Blue like I use for Tie Fighters
