How do you make a tube out of sheet styrene?
« on: Wed Feb, 17, 2016, 01:50:PM »
OK, so I'm trying to scratchbuild a Hoth Golan Arms Df.9 battery (the big white turret). I'm trying to build the center tube piece. I've measured everything out. The bottom diameter is 7.1 cm, top diameter is 6.9 cm, and the height is 7 cm. Is there a pattern for laying this out on sheet styrene so I can cut it out and curve it into the tube I need with those dimensions?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

The only thing I can think of is to take and cut out a few circles of the right size and using them as an  internal brace so that the tube will take the proper shape.

Thanks.

A friend at Keeper of the Force posted a link for a truncated cone calculator: http://www.templatemaker.nl/index.php?template=cone&lang=en

I'm fortunate to have a train/hobby shop near me that keeps all sorts of styrene sheet/tubes/braces, et-al in stock.  But the few times I've had to fabricate a tube from scratch I've used 110lb card stock to create a template and then, depending on the situation, I've either used white glue to "paint" the tube for strength, or I've used a heat gun and sheet styrene to create the tube by rolling it around the cardstock template.

The "heat and roll" method is a serious pain in the butt and has always required a lot of putty and sanding to get a smooth cylinder afterwards so I don't do it if I can avoid it at all.
